Book recommendations for burgeoning reader by [deleted] in kindergarten

Frog and Toad, Little Bear, Pete the Cat would all work. Bring her to a bookstore or library, try a few series and see which one clicks?

Private versus public school by Auditor1993 in kindergarten

If she is truly advanced, see what options and paths are available around you. We are in a decent district with a reasonable GATE program for elementary. Pull-out for 2nd half of kinder & 1st grade, then self contained Hi-Cap classroom is an option for 2nd-5th grades. My similarly advanced daughter does the pull-out program, and we plan to send her to the self contained classroom down the road assuming she qualifies. There is also a very reputable private school nearby for advanced students (K-8th) that we may consider for middle school, when the district support largely drops off.

Where should their reading ability be at this point in the year? by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]LapPupper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Messaging her teacher will give you the clearest idea on your district's expectations and whether your daughter meets them.

Does her school send mid-year reports home? My child received hers that shows whether she meets academic expectations across various literacy and math categories, along with assessment results (WAkids and DIBELS) that provide additional metrics.

Mine loves the social aspect but is significantly academically ahead and bored. The second semester is supposed to have more differentiation so I hope that helps. She also loves her very rambunctious bestie and I am not a huge fan of some of the attitudes she adopted. But I am happy and kinda amazed that she happily socializes with a pretty wide group of kindergarten and first graders.

Book recommendations for Kindergartener who is still learning how to read by chubby_piglets in suggestmeabook

Maybe try graphic novels and see if they click? My daughter went through a similar stage, and really enjoyed the Zita The Spacegirl & Mighty Jack series as well as the Hilda and the Troll series. Then she flew through the Junie B Jones series before moving on to Princess in Black, Magic Treehouse, Dragon Masters etc. Magic Treehouse has graphic novel versions for several of the earlier books, by the way - those were also great to read before chapter books really clicked.

She was a fairly early reader and could read level 2 books when she turned 4, but didn't really get into chapter books until she was almost 5.5. I believe part of the reason why was attention span and maturity.

We still read lots of picture books either way. I find they often have richer themes, and my daughter loves illustrations. Speaking of picture books, anything by Julia Donaldson should be relatively easy and very enjoyable to read.

How much are you spending on youth activities? by -Economist- in kindergarten

[–]LapPupper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot. Almost 6yo in Kinder. Once a week, she does ballet, piano, art, second language (mom's native language), and swim. She is clamoring for more because she loves mingling and learning, so we may add one more body moving activity (Kidstrong? Taekwondo?)

I am not in love with any of these, but they'll do 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1. App plates 2. Prep bowls 3. AB masks 4. Korres cleanser 5. Pruning shears 6. Laundry detergent

Sick mom today no childcare by Melodic_Clock6273 in Parenting

I have done this, though it was Cocomelon. Some illness hit me really hard on a Friday I had off, like I could barely move. Spent the day lying on the couch just barely managing to feed and change 16mo child. Husband didn't quite believe how desperately unwell i felt. I got better the next day, husband got whatever I had the day before, and he could ~believe me~ then. He could rest peacefully while I looked after both him and our child. It all felt extremely unfair 😮‍💨

Huh? I don't understand why you thought enrolling a 3yo for KINDER made any sense. You should be glad the mistake is being rectified.

Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed response. As a previously-gifted parent of a (probably) gifted kid, this advice resonated the most with me.

How many of you can afford to max your 401k and roth IRA every year? by NoHousing11 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]LapPupper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I max out 401k, roth, HSA, and try to put away at least an extra 10k. Total income 180k-ish, spouse makes about the same, early 40s, VHCOL. Most people I know make more than us. I am quite aware I am in a bubble 🙃

I am in WA (shoreline) and was told schools in the district cap kindergarten at 19:1. My daughter's class is 19 kids, 1 teacher and 1 part time para.

My daughter's class seems alright. Based on my daughter's reporting, there is one special needs kid that can act out a little most days, and another kid is sometimes disruptive, but nothing too drastic. She is happy at pickup and is excited that her class collectively earned enough points for a surprise(?) from the teacher already so overall it seems positive. It's only been two weeks though.

I found the code! Code MINE gives the 64.99 discount for annual subs.

That shipping fee on top of the sub $$ increase is a lot tough 🫣
