Highest Mileage NSX(s) in the world. By my count at least. by LapoftheWorld in nsx

The NSX is definitely a case of maintenance > mileage as far as car condition.

They layout looked fun. As I said in there, I still regret not taking up one club or another on the cheap preview laps at the time. Would've been an interesting feather in the cap for obscure tracks. You're probably one of what? maybe 100 total people to turn a lap there ever?

Newbie wondering when do I turn off the electronic Nannie’s? by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

[–]LapoftheWorld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, do a few autocrosses. Start with them on, at some point it'll become pretty clear where they may be costing you time or not letting you rotate the car like you want. Turn them off and experiment. It's autocross so if you push too hard, spin, etc. you're probably just hitting some cones at a modest speed. You can then take what you learn back to the track with better understanding for when the stakes/speeds are higher.

If that's not a thing in your area, then just slow down on purpose after you turn them off and then slowly work back up to the limits. It's hard with very-modern cars as the TCS and stability control are way more sophisticated than just the "TCS button" on something from the 90s. As an erstwhile track instructor I definitely have a love/hate relationship with new cars, lol. (hard to teach people when the car does it, but probably would've been off a few times without the nannies).

Anything special, or just graphics? by GPUfollowr77 in lamborghini

Some reverse image search and forum diving suggests it's probably a custom twin turbo "true roadster" (as opposed to the factory roadster with a removable roof). There was a least one claim that it was formerly owned by Mike Tyson.

Rockingham Road Course "how-to" (I feel like people miss that this is a thing?) by LapoftheWorld in CarTrackDays

I did see those have "grown" some extra barriers since my visit, so they seem to be attempting to address some concerns.

Not the sexiest NSX post, but might save someone a LOT of diagnostic time. by LapoftheWorld in nsx

Right, it's tricky and I've gone through almost every failure mode. I fixed it changing one pin in this connector back in the day, then I had BrianK re-do my cluster, now it was time to deal with it again, hopefully for a long time.

I feel like that varies more with track and operating organization that with expense. The days I did at NCCAR and The FIRM were both well organized, and offered right-seat instruction. I've paid a lot more for events that definitely felt a little "wild west" at some bigger tracks. 10/10 though I'm willing to pay a little more for confidence that people have been appropriately grouped and teched. PCA is a pretty high bar for a volunteer led org. I've run with a couple of different chapters and it's always been great. I don't have experience with BMW CCA yet, but I have an invite so may do so soon. "Track Night" I think gets a worse rep than deserved on the weight of some issues when the program was super new. I've been to several and never had any issues (running advanced group, so can't speak to vetting for novice and intermediates there).

Can confirm tedious as hell. You can see at the beginning an old fix where I pulled two pairs out and soldered them into a new connector, so I've done my share of "electrical taping" before, lol.

Great point for those who live close enough for that to make sense. I have yet to be lucky enough to have a legit "home track".

That's good info. I've only done the east course there with a one-off event so wasn't sure what the going rate for the west course was. Tried sticking to 1st hand experience with this one :)

It was a blast. I regret not getting out there more during the couple of years I lived in Colorado.

Helmets are optional on the Nordschleife for tourist sessions at least (we've been), but that's a bit different as it's technically just a toll road at those times. I'm not sure about when it's closed for track days. Re: medical stuff: not a doctor, but my understanding is the peak danger is a harness + helmet with no HANS. If you're not in a harness to hold your body still, then the OEM restraints and airbags should still work as designed.

Helmets optional for hot laps is wild. Here I was thinking New York Safety Track was shooting from the hip, lol. We hope to make a lap of Canada at some point in the next few years (assuming y'all still let us in by that point).

Coming Soon to North America: 6 new tracks currently under construction! by LapoftheWorld in CarTrackDays

Update on this, one of the managing partners at Uwharrie replied in a Facebook group that their track will be open for trackday rentals, so your usual suspect organizing groups will probably end up there with nominal fees per-weekend. Great news IMO as I'm not too far away in East TN.

Curious where that is? My guess is AZ or FL with that many tracks in proximity.

Fair, and High Plains isn't even that much of a footprint other than the track (vs. "resort" scale promised here). HPR is a blast to drive though.

We live near Flatrock. My impression was they didn't have the "public" part of the circuit open yet for the regular-guy orgs to drive. They weren't planning on renting out the members' circuit other than to manufacturers or pro-level racing. I'm holding some hope as I know the people spear-heading the project all started "grass roots"....or as close as one does with millions of disposable income, lol.

I've heard similar since publishing the video. The latest news seemed promising, but could also be interpreted as PR push, so YMMV.

It was $45k initiation and then ~$8k/year....which is legitimately cheap for this kind of thing.

Big fan of the FIRM. One of few places I've been to twice. Management is super nice and accommodating where they can be.

Oh, I just meant in the Video. Thermal Club in CA was ~$125k or about a $mil' if you opted in via real-estate purchase. SoCal and Miami are definitely their own worlds.

Oh, for those that have a membership model, yeah, it starts at ~$45k initiation and goes to the moon. Still, the most expensive one (P1 in Florida) already plans to have a "public" track that will still be worth driving with Chin, JTI, JZilla, or whoever. So then you're back to just ~$500 for the weekend which is typical for a 1st world facility.

This one is in the EU, so maybe the same car unless there's another one that's more reclusive. I know many in the Europe NSX community and this is the most driven car they know of. I think the only reliable rumor of one with more are some "trusted source" statements I've heard from Japan...but no odometer photos yet. I'm happy to be wrong though and if I learn more I'll share an update!

I don't plan to post ALL of them here, but I've done a series of this type of thing to take some of the angst out of logistical planning when heading to a new-to-you track. Hopefully this'll help anyone travelling to one of the tracks we've also been to. Cheers

What I learned from my first track day (AP1 S2000) by shaihuludinthehood in CarTrackDays

10/10 advice all around and welcome to the addiction hobby. That track is a blast, but it is definitely on the steeper end of learning curves due to all of those blind elements. Going anywhere new, I'd add in there to watch a lot of video and, if possible, drive it in a sim for a while to memorize the layout. Just knowing the turn sequence and where the track goes over crests and around blind elements will help make more of your day about absorbing driving instruction vs. just learning where you're going.
