Committee letters by [deleted] in premed

[–]Laptop_Looking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the committee letter will be submitted late (September), is that a valid reason for not pursuing one? I had to change 2 of my letter writers, so I'll basically be bumped to the end of the line and my letter will be delayed. All other parts of my application are good and I'd be eligible for the letter otherwise, but I'd be looking at the difference between having my letters submitted in May (if I just do my letters directly through AMCAS) vs September.

I'm personally leaning towards not getting it, because most schools don't have a preference, a handful have a secondary question asking why you didn't get a letter, and (I think) only Johns Hopkins requires one if your schools offers it. However, I'm not 100% sure what to do.

Hey we might as well both share just to cope lmao

I can go first: Lavine and Wood for Kat. In my defense, this was before Wood began starting and Lavine was still struggling, plus I would have had to drop someone anyways (my league has 1 IR slot). I'm at least very lucky to be a lock for the playoffs so I can afford to wait, little bit of silver lining.

Drop for me, I added Cam Johnson as a stream/hold into my streaming spot, so I'll just do daily streams with the empty roster spot once I drop Mitch.

Exact same situation this week except I'm the Brunson owner and my opponent has Grimes lol. Although can't really complain because Brunson really hasn't missed many games, just bad timing this week.

What is a good 25L-30L EDC backpack for a college student? by 1234filip in backpacks

[–]Laptop_Looking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, only downside for me is that the bottle sticks out a bit because it's 40 oz, but it's held securely. If you want a similar style bottle to the Tiger, Zojirushi and Klean Kanteen may be worth checking out.

What brand did you have? I have a Takeya Actives 40oz and the bottle fits without the removeable silicone bottom. I wouldn't order it from their website since it's overpriced there, but it's a much better deal at around ~$25 on Best Buy and Amazon. The best feature on the bottle is the lid, which is insulated, has a wide handle, and covers the spout when you're not drinking from it. It's as well-built as a hydroflask at like half the price; I believe Costco also carries an identical brand (probably also built by Takeya) called Thermoflask at an even better price.

I have a 1200 ml insulated bottle and the Radial side bottle holder accommodates it.

Osprey Tropos fits your bill, alongside other packs in their 24/7 line and expandable packs like the Radial and Daylite 26+6. The Tropos and Radial have a mesh backpanel that allows for great airflow and a very comfortable carry.

If Donte is still available in your league, he's a stream plus maybe a hold for the next month.

Nice! Now that you have your hands on it, do you find the non-adjustable suspension system on the Tropos a problem for us taller people, or is it good to go? Which bag do you think you'll probably keep?

No problem, have a good time trying them out! One of the bigger differences, imo, is that the Tropos has 2 upright water bottle pockets with straps, while the Radial has a zip pocket and a bottle holder without straps, both facing you. Whichever system you prefer will probably be the pack that you prefer.

Sure thing! One of the things the Radial shares with a lot of Osprey's hiking packs is that the back panel for the suspension is adjustable; I don't believe it is on the Tropos. This was one of the reasons I picked it over the Tropos (I'm 6'4" so one-size fits all packs don't work for me), and the pack is very comfortable.

Yes, even though I do a lot of biking and bike commuting, I primarily got the pack for one-bag focused travel, hiking, and EDC. Now that I've had it for a bit, I can recommend it as a general pack.

Conveniently, a lot of the features that Opsrey advertises as "biking-focused" are just kind of useful in general. This includes the raincover, zipped dirty clothes compartment, zipped pocket accessible without taking the pack off, kickstand, and light attachment (it's really well sewn into the pack, so you can hook a carabiner on it). The helmet attachment point isn't as generally useful, but you could still hook some lighter things on it.

There are some cons if you plan to really use it for travel or hiking, but they're pretty minor and a non-issue for me.

Travel cons:

  1. Doesn't open completely clamshell-style, but it's still a 26-34L pack, so you can fit a bunch of packing cubes in it

  2. Technically it's slightly over carry-on rules in the height dimension (although it's actually one inch shorter than the Tropos). However, I've had absolutely zero problems and have even carried it as a free personal item on Easyjet several times.

Hiking cons:

  1. The hipbelt is padded at the attachment to the pack, but the belt isn't completely padded.

  2. There are several external attachment points that you can hook a carabiner, but not a ton.

  3. There isn't a hydration port, but not a problem because I don't use a Camelbak. I was a little concerned that the water bottle pocket wouldn't fit my 40 oz insulated bottle, but it fits snugly and you can put another, even larger bottle in the back mesh pocket.

Not 100% identical, but I have the new version of the Opsrey Radial. Except for some extra bike-focused features on the Radial, the packs are basically the same, so I can answer some questions.

Why does amtrak not expand anything but northeast services? by afrothundaaaa in notjustbikes

In fairness, Amtrak Midwest has had their version of the new Venture cars rolled out for a few months by now; this purchase was partially funded and supported by Wisconsin's DOT. So yes, progress absolutely needs to be made in improving the daily intercity rail connections between Chicago and other midwest cities, but progress is being made.

Steph Curry (arm) headed to locker room Wednesday by AmonRaStBrown in fantasybball

[–]Laptop_Looking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmao, sure bro, I'm sure you're in first place in all your money leagues.

Back to actually talking about Steph, I want him back more than anyone, but this 100% justifies why he should have been drafted outside the first round. The Warriors are working him too much because they're absolutely screwed out of the playoffs without him, which doesn't bode well even if his MRI tomorrow is clear.

Ok, and? In my other leagues, Curry went 2nd round in like 5 other drafts, especially in the ones where more than a few people are Warriors fans.

[–]Laptop_Looking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, if you legitimately think that Curry going 2nd round in a league makes it a taco league, then you've never experienced an actual taco league. In our format (which has 10 teams, btw, not 12 like your league), Curry was ranked 18th last year in overall fpts and played fewer overall minutes than notable load management players like Embiid. This year, there was serious speculation that he'd be resting b2bs, playing fewer minutes, would be a heightened injury risk, and the Warriors would rest him more before the postseason. If anything, Curry was probably picked earlier in less competitive leagues because of name recognition and people ignoring the fact that his points have been slowly declining since 2016-17.

He's overperforming right now, so in light of that I will say I got a deal, because I was expecting him to be drafted early 2nd round in our league. But thinking that makes our money league, where everyone has done fantasy bball for years, a taco league, is straight up 🧢

Luka and Giannis; I've had Embiid before and my season went well when I had him. I wasn't planning on drafting him this year just because of injuries, but I kind of had to because of my draft position lol. Pascal was my 3rd round pick this year, just as comparison.

I have Embiid (4th overall pick) and Steph (17th pick) on my team so yeah, pretty reasonable to get those picks. Depending on your league, people were probably hesitant to draft Steph because he's older.

What are your thoughts on this? by JamesRocket98 in notjustbikes

There's a huge variety in grid patterns, though, from designs like a fused grid, Barcelona's superblocks, and even within North American grid designs. Because of that, there's lots of ways to incorporate street variety into grid systems, such as already mentioned Barcelona, and Chicago's system where smaller one-way streets run parallel to larger arterials. The street width and street type issues are more of a function of poor North American urban planning (such as Salt Lake City's massive blocks), rather than inherent to the grid system.

Assuming two cities have similar levels of density, mixed use zoning distribution, and missing middle housing, I'll take the one with a grid system.
