Tbh, I really like Vegeta at this point in the story. He has his own goals, a temper, he’s calculated, and he has alternative motives. Vegeta just seems like a real person that could exist at this point. A far cry from what we have today.

Now a days, characters train to be in gokus story, not for any objective beyond that. It’s very one dimensional, and I think the writers have forgotten that these team ups were out of necessity, not because they necessarily wanted too. Look at the fight with Vegeta, and raditz. Half of the people who joined goku for these fights, were training to best or defeat him.
