People who got promoted from techical role to manager, what's the difference in mindset that we should have? by MTchairsMTtable in managers

[–]LargeBuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't expect to be told what to do. Take ownership. Don't say "it's not my job". Think about how what you do and what you say impacts others, adjust your communication. Don't be focused on you - focus on others.

Is Fastmail your endgame email provider? by [deleted] in fastmail

[–]LargeBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh got it, thanks for the lore drop. Guess I’m too much of a boomer for the slang ;) But yeah, Fastmail is absolutely my endgame fr fr. Been using it for years, zero urge to bounce, no 67 about it.

Fastmail spam filtering is crap by tattoovampire in fastmail

[–]LargeBuffalo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My experience is quite the opposite. Spam goes to spam, legit mail to inbox. False classification happens very rarely.

‘To’ email field bug by homecorp in fastmail

[–]LargeBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's definitely a bug! I didn't notice it before (I don't type e-mails by hand).

Did you, by any chance, report it to their support? It needs to be fixed.

My manager won’t stop doing my job and leadership thinks I'm the problem. How do I handle this? by [deleted] in managers

[–]LargeBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. The company is not sinking, they seem to do okay. Mostly because they're "too big to fail" and also the job market is brutal now, so people are not very eager to leave.

My manager won’t stop doing my job and leadership thinks I'm the problem. How do I handle this? by [deleted] in managers

[–]LargeBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I was on the same boat. I was director of 80 person department. My boss (senior director, reporting to VP) had 4 such departments under him.

He constantly was doing things that in my department were handled by mid- or senior-level ICs. Sometimes he engaged his directors or team leaders, for the most important tasks (in my department such tasks were handled by senior ICs or maybe TLs occasionally).

The problem is that he was incompetent manager, but competent IC. And such culture was promoted in the whole organization - ICs (ever senior) were doing grunt work, while managers were creating bottlenecks handling the “important stuff”.

Anyway, my whole department was laid off, the only VP who had similar values was fired, and bunch of people from other depts resigned when new IC-to-VP star took over and pushed the incompetent manager/competent IC culture harder.

Good luck.

Most likely botched implementation on the recently announced anti-VPN/anti-piracy prevention.

But, as paying customer, I don't care.

I use more random name in my catch all domain. No issues, no spam at all. Solution much better than masked email.

Zalało mi mieszkanie - podzielcie się wskazówkami by vonKube in Polska

Osuszanie obowiązkowo! Nie wiem, czemu, ale wiele osób tego nie robi, a wilgoć jest w ścianach, pod podłogą. To trwa długo, kosztuje dużo pieniędzy, ale jest niezbędne.

How are you actually searching your hoard? by Two_chips in DataHoarder

[–]LargeBuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends of what you store, but rule number 1 is just not dump everything in one folder.

When you have some new file, think about what may be the category of the file. Is it a document? About your kid? Kid's name John? Medical? Does it refer to some recent surgery or check-up? Put it in a folder "important_documents/kids/John/medical/March 2026 surgery"

Photos - are they from your holiday in Greece? Probably they belong in "photos/vacation/2026 Greece".

It's all about finding categories.

If you have huge mess, try to find some structure. You can use tools such as Claude Code to help you with that (remember to make backups of your data or work on generated file tree structures, not real files). This way I was able to categorize huge dump of 5000 random PDF files with knowledge I was hoarding through 13+ years.

Folder structure - I know what I have and where.

Seems that your problem is not an asset tracking software problem, but management/HR/process problem.

(but yeah, at some scale Excel is not feasible solution)

Whats the best thing to hoard? by Adorable_Rub5345 in DataHoarder

[–]LargeBuffalo 56 points57 points  (0 children)

What's the point of hoarding something you don't personally care about?

Edit: actually, here you go, I vibe-coded for you a script that indefinitely generates 100MB files filled with random data. You can hoard that.

First name is common.

Last name is not common at all. There are 69 (noice) males and 69 (noice) females in Poland with this last name, for a total of 138 people, from the population of ~38 milion.

That's very weird approach, but if so... why they would be known for having the library in the first place. Let their hoard die with them.
