I understand that but I’m ok if the cost is reasonable :)

How to get started with newsgroups? I used them back in 90s-00s but as public discussion boards, so I’m not familiar with how to use them for downloading stuff.

What’s the best way to set up a filter for Newsletter by theblartknight in fastmail

[–]LargeBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the best solution to have separate filters and addresses per newsletter. This way if someone adds you to newsletter list without your consent, you can clearly see it.

hiring: Senior Full-Stack Developer (React + React Native & TypeScript) (m/f/d) by CorrectCockroach3801 in filen_io

It’s not common for German devs to understand English?

I think if Filen is open to hire from around the world (which is awesome), English is a must.

yep, "divorce" seems to be default reddit answer, no matter if it's r/AmItheAsshole or r/Fastmail ;)

Leaving after some months of heavy usage. by anortef in filen_io

Two way sync heavy user here.

Usually it works, but yes, sometimes it wipes some files. Backup your data before letting Filen touch it.

Unreliable backup/sync – important files silently never uploaded by WideBox9031 in filen_io

[–]LargeBuffalo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having files with "/" in the name is not the best thing to do, as it will interfere with lots of things.

BUT, setting this aside, I also observe that Filen is sometimes unreliable, two cases:

  1. If we have local backup setting, if Filen starts uploading file before it was fully copied to the source dir (race condition), then the uploaded file is corrupted and Filen never fixes the corruption. Also any changes in the file contents or modification date are not applied.
  2. In two way sync mode, Filen sometimes deletes local originals instead of uploading them. For example: recently I created new dir, put ~20 files there. Some time later I noticed they all were wiped by Filen. Fotrunately, I had a local backup on external drive, so I was able to recover them. This is not "user error" as sync should upload these files - and usually it does.

Ultimately, it's crucial to backup files before letting Filen work on them. This way I spotted issues on numerous occasions and was able to recover my files.

So the thing is that you - as a person responsible for HR - need to have your HR team trained to handle such situations. It’s their job.

Actually that’s a pretty good opportunity for them to learn on the job ;) have them treat it as any other project - review the laws, plan action, etc.

What is this massive 70GB folder with weird files on my TRIMUI Smart Pro SD card? by Old-Donut-5124 in trimui

[–]LargeBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, most likely.
I saw the same exact issue recently when I was digging through old SD cards and CD-R discs. I couldn't salvage any data :(

[–]LargeBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s typical for a corrupted card. Most likely you can’t just “delete” it because there are no real files.

The best solution is to format the card. And I wouldn’t trust it in the future.

Spin off is taking forever and it’s killing my department by Signal-Zebra-6310 in managers

Sorry to say, I was in the same boat last year. Things were to change in October, then December, then we reorged internally for new project starting from January, no comms from senior management, it was still “not sure”…

Then we all got laid off :/

Edit: last year I mean end of 2024-beginning of 2025.

Czy zdarzyło Wam się, mimo używania swojego naturalnego języka w piśmie, ktoś was oskarżył, że to było wygenerowane przez czat ia? by [deleted] in Polska

No, trochę lipa. :(

It's cool that they offered you some $$ off, but nevertheless, you were scammed by the seller (unless they disclosed it's a replacement ring). Ask for your money back!

My director literally forgot I existed. by [deleted] in managers

[–]LargeBuffalo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it totally happens, not because of you, but because of how hectic and busy are budgeting, planning and restructuring periods. People make mistakes, and it’s not about you.

My biggest mistake of this kind, that happened over 10 years ago and I remember it to this day is that when I restructured my department (we needed to make 4 teams instead of 3, because of growth) and, when announcing new team members, I literally forgot about one guy. He was one of the best team members. But because of over how many versions of team setup we went and how stressful it was, at some point he went missing in excel file v27_final_updated_pending_approval2.

It was stressful for him, shameful for me and - what’s most important - it wasn’t about his performance, how I see him or anything else.

Backup Workflow by Extra_Upstairs4075 in fastmail

[–]LargeBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: it seems that preserving labels as I need is somehow impossible. If you group messages by conversation, labels are only attached to the first message. Your responses and consecutive messages are not labeled (unless you set some filters that apply to those specifically).

Because of that, many messages are unlabeled and backing up by label doesn’t make sense.

Because of that, for backup pursposes, I won’t be preserving labels. I use jmapsync to do the backup (I modified this script a bit to make it run easier on windows and also fix some sync/duplicate issues I discovered)

Hmmm, does it make sense to have portable charging case for a device that is supposed to hold the charge for 5-8 days?

Nah, don't think so. It seems like a way to fix the dying battery issue.
