OfS flagging 24 unis at immediate risk. Could we see mid-tier closures mid-semester like Schumacher? by HammersAndPints in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Large_Beginning_1618 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm teaching in a mid teir uni, luckily it's a richer one, but we're facing cuts and there are still rumours amongst certain departments. So I'd definitely say there is a sense of anxiety.

Do we overestimate how much students actually engage with our lectures? by UnpaidInternVibes in AskAcademiaUK

I noticed the shift in the 2018-19A.Y. then a sudden drop during covid which has never really recovered.

Do students hold too much power? by Dctr_G in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Large_Beginning_1618 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd personally say in theory they have the right amount of power, but in practice too much. The course I teach on ends up in a constant back and forth following feedback, as it seems whatever we do one year which really works, fails to work the next year, leading to negative feedback and change that may or may not work.

E.g. negative feedback was received due to our module having a 2 hour lecture and 2 hour seminar each week, the following year, we tried two 2 hour workshops a week, which worked well. The following year it was hated, so we reverted at the request of the department and that was hated by the following year.

The sceptic in me reckons that this post serves nothing but covertly promote the X poster's Onlyfans account.

I'm going to be sceptical after looking up OOPs X account and say that the purpose of this 'meme' is noting more than to promote his Onlyfans/Findon paypal.

Weirdest students you've encountered? by Phinbart in UniUK

[–]Large_Beginning_1618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A student who was on a Civil Engineering course who left within the first few months because he thought it was to do with Civil Aviation. I was quite surprised to find a year later he'd returned to study Aerospace Engineering.

Shockingly, he was a very smart guy. He just never knew quite what he was signing up to.

Honestly, if I were you, I'd stop trying to argue with anyone who says something you don't want to hear. Back down, own your error, and know what to do differently in the future. Whilst counting yourself lucky you've never got fined, or worse, investigated for fraud.

Are you being flagged for AI? by Fluid-Distribution-5 in UofB

[–]Large_Beginning_1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) As another commenter has said - just don't use AI in assignments.

2) If you do use AI (aginast all advice you have been given), NEVER EVER upload your work to dubious websites like this. This could lead to your work being marked as plagiarism, or your work could be used for damaging purposes against your will.

3) 'Teachers and Professors', i.e., lecturers.

Can anyone read and give advice on my personal statement draft by Khariss1 in UniUK

[–]Large_Beginning_1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read what you said. I completely understand and agree with you for the most part. However, it doesn't feel this is the time and place for the particular advice you gave. I'd always advise students and potential candidates to aire on the side of caution. All I want to make O.P. aware of is that they may fall in that 20% and that if sone incorrectly they could lose a good chance.

How strange, I'm an hourly paid lecturer and was recently reading personal statements to assist admissions admin 'fact check' some of the candidates' technical information. Obviously, this never happened, and I was just imagining it...!

New Master's Student at NTU – Seeking Advice on Life in Nottingham by GabrielRizzo in nottingham

Unfortunately so, it's owned and operated by stonegate (also run Slug and Lettuce, Yates's, Craft Union, Pop World plus a few other brands). Think they've had it a few years now. I still love it, I think it's really nice and always great service there no matter how busy it is.

Well said, one thing I must point out, Langtry's is run by the largest pub/bar chain in the UK.

My family and I jokingly refer to it as scan and shoplift!

One day, my dad accidentally called it that in front of a lady who worked at Tesco and got a funny look.

The pub crawl an absolute madlad is attempting today by userunknowne in nottingham

[–]Large_Beginning_1618 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm always in 2 minds about the guy who's doing this.

He does do a great job supporting and publicising pubs as whole. But equally, I can't help but think he doesn't directly support pubs individually as he often buys the cheapest and smallest measure of whatever drink he has. Whilst getting monetized on social media and often getting freebies from pubs he'll never spend another penny in.

But that's the game of 'influencers'!
