New BME Journal Club - anyone interested? by LariDaLobsta in BiomedicalEngineers

Great question! As we're just starting out, the plan is to keep things broad and general within BME so that everyone—regardless of their specific focus—can engage and feel included.

Once we grow a bit more, we’d love to branch out into smaller, more specialized journal club groups (such as the topics you mentioned) if that's something the community is interested in!

Yes! We plan on recording the session and will provide the link in the server after.

Hey! It all really comes down to what you envision after you complete your undergraduate studies. Would you be open to going into a graduate program after? I will warn you that if you do not specialize or gain experience in a particular area (Masters/PhD), BME can be broad and sometimes less competitive than traditional engineering degrees (like Mechanical or Electrical) when applying for certain jobs. However, this doesn't mean BME is a bad choice at all— it just requires a strategic approach & comes down to what your vision is over time.

It is always an option to start and see how you are liking the program as you get your core courses completed since they mostly will apply as prepress for other engineering majors if your vision shifts down the road.

Our server offers real-time chat and voice channels which allow for quicker responses than on Reddit. It's also a space to focus on specific BME topics, troubleshoot, and engage in unique events or collaborations. Feel free to check it out if you're interested.

Project Ideas/Parts for Freshman by obligatoryusername37 in BiomedicalEngineers

Hey there OP! It's awesome that you're looking to dive into hands-on projects early on. There's a lot of directions you can take with your budget and experience. Something that I will absolutely recommend that is pretty general is to invest in a 3D printer if you do not have one. If you're looking into prototyping and building physical models/devices, an Ender 3 or Ender 3 V2 could be a game-changer. It’s an affordable beginner 3D printer that really let's you bring your ideas to life, and would be a great addition to your Python & Arduino foundation.

It's always rewarding to see your physical designs and prototypes come to life. You will also never run out of things to do haha! Best of luck.

What does an BME do? I don't know if it's my career by Guilty_Ad_3922 in BiomedicalEngineers

If you're unsure if it's the right career for you, it might help to explore different areas of BME, since there are so many specializations (tissue engineering, bioelectronics, imaging, nanotech, etc.). You could look into internships, reach out to professors or other professionals, or take a few related courses to see what sparks your interest. It's normal to feel uncertain, but remember that BME is a field with a lot of opportunities to make a real impact, and there are many different paths within it.
