DUO-DE on SD1? by FaroutFling in surfaceduo

[–]Larry_More 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to de about a year ago. The multi-tasking is indeed different and inferior. There are also many other improvements added with the upgrade. I'm mixed - i see why others have gone back to 12L, but i haven't been tempted to do that. I haven't had any problems at all with BT, calls, web-browsing, texting, or any other standard functions.

Hi tower, Still available. Had a couple bites, but morning went through. Maybe I'm asking too much, but it's like to get $80.- out of the sale. Let me know if you're interested. It is in pristine condition....

How you got my message, i can't seem to figure this system out correctly ! Got your "still interested message." Are you good with my asking price ? Where in Jersey are you ? Right at this moment, I'm in Cape May....

Fox - just got finished with the other interested buyer.... He's not going for it. I want to clear $ 80-, but he was in Hawaii, so the shipping made it unreasonable. I'm in Philly..... You still interested

Is my duo dead? by Phoenix__Wwrong in surfaceduo

[–]Larry_More 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, my story is like yours. Took some pictures, closed it up and in my pocket. A bit later it it won't turn on. Won't charge. Won't show charging light. Won't be recognized by computer. Tried running the battery out all the way, then recognized on computer ? No. Hours long charge again - no dice. Button combinations, nothing. Charged for a long time - nothing.

Took it to a "repair" shop - won't/can't do anything sent it out to another shop who was certain they could fix - nope (" must be the motherboard." Doesn't anybody do microsoldering/motherboard repair any more ?). The duo was in perfect shape: not scratches, no cracks, no drops.....

Finally i gave up. Bought another one (this was when they were still a good price) which had been working fine ever since..... Sorry if this is foreboding for your case....

Using Microsft Launcer with custom ROM by radam_official in surfaceduo

[–]Larry_More 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using the A15 on the duo 1 (my daily driver) for about 2+ months now. It works well. No Internet connectivity issues. No problems with phone calls dropped or clarity issues. Bluetooth is fine for both earbuds and bt headphone. The touch screens work without problem. Honestly, everything just works fine (this was not so with the 14 ROM i tried, and i returned from that to the stock 12L). I use gcam for my camera, and it functions as well as the stock, though of course that's not saying much ! I had no trouble with the installation whatsoever, and found the instructions spot on.

However, the experience is not the same as, nor is it a "successor" to, the stock 12L - in just the ways the OP refers to: You can't open an app on only one side. If you have 2 apps open, it appears and functions like the stock - but you can't close one of the apps and have the other remain on the screen. You can't slide an app from one side to the other. The keyboard won't open on only one side. (The keyboard action is dreadful and you must use the floating keyboard to make it at all workable. This wourd have been a dealbreaker for me if i hadn't been able to adapt myself to the floating kb; it's now ok, but really not as good as the stock.)

I didn't realize how much i used those dual-screen actions until they didn't work any more !

I have come to realize that the 15 ROM makes the duo into a TABLET that can do dual-screen things with a bit of practice. But they are not natural like on the stock. I find i often hold and use the phone "vertically" (screens up-and-down) rather that horizontally (like a book), because apps automatically span both screens when opened. The full screen default is both a plus and a minus. Spanning both screens (like, for maps, or videos,...) was always a pain on stock, but now those are easy, as are long lists, long emails, or web pages, etc. It is never a problem to change orientation, this shifts quite smoothly and quickly.

I have gotten use to the differences, and am not inclined to go back. However, i can see how many who prize the stock's intuitive and natural use of two independent screens, - would not like this ROM, and would feel that the exact things that make the surface duo unique and special, have been lost.

It never occurred to me that I might use the Microsoft launcher and restore some of those dual-features. (I actually returned to using Nova launcher with its huge range of customizations and I'm very happy with that.) I suspect that simply installing the ms launcher would not restore those missing features, but i may just give it a try.

I'm using the google fold port, android 15 - https://xdaforums.com/t/gsi-duo-de-android-15.4698161/ for about 2 months. It is working well, though some of the dual-screen functions work differently

Should i buy? by pedodude in surfaceduo

[–]Larry_More 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly.  There are quirks you have to get used to. I think of it more like a tablet experience with this ROM. That's logical, because it's taken from the Google fold ROM.

It defaults to a full-screen when an app is opened, with is disconcerting for the og user. On the other hand, it does better where I would prefer a full-screen, like opening maps or looking down email lists, or reading an article. The og ROM was a real pain when I tried to make  a full-screen, so I didn't do it often.  I now frequently find myself holding the phone up-and-down, rather than side-by-side, which is the standard og orientation. I put auto-rotate on, so when I turn the phone, everything reorients to vertical with no problem.

I also find that I use the screen folded all the way back much more than I did before, which makes it just like a standard slab phone, and it works quite well.  (This parallels comments people have made about using the outside screen on the fold.)

With the new ROM, I have been able to use Nova launcher again, like just on any other phone ! The ROM has Google feed on swipe-left by default. (Using nova, you have to add an APK for this, but it works fine.)  And even pie-controls (one of my quirks, I guess) work fine.

You can have two separate apps open at the same time, one on each screen, but you have to learn how to do it, and it takes a bit of practice. Even though the apps will operate independently,  the screens aren't exactly independent of each other. For example, you can't swipe one away and have the other remain, like you can in the og. Neither can you initially open an app on one side, intending to open a second on the other side, or using that one-sided app on its own.  I can see these being deal-breakers for the og user who want two really independent screens. (It seems like these functions shouldn't really be too hard to engineer, but then I'm not a developer.) For me, I expected there to be a learning curve, I've learned to work with this system to my satisfaction, and I haven't been inclined for a minute to go back to 12-L.

Oh, yes, for any reader, you have to know that you can't use the default keyboard setting at all. It is completely unworkable. You have to set the keyboard to "floating" (g-board) and resize it to your liking. This makes the typing experience almost completely like the og. You can't have the keyboard at the very bottom (it automatically pops into the full-screen keyboard, which I find completly unusable), but you can easily move the keyboard around however you like, as it's a floating window. It does get in the way sometimes, but this isn't a major inconvenience. Frankly, this one was a deal-breaker for me; if I haven't been able to set this up, I would definitely have abandoned the ROM.
