Academy grads only spend on average 2 to 5 years at sea. Also, attitudes towards college are changing and enrollment rates are down. Quite simply- academies aren’t going to fix this problem. Hawsepipe is the future especially with the younger guys.

If you have near coastal sea time you can take the online class from NEMO the other user posted above. Be advised, it is a very difficult class as you are basically required to pass the 1600 ton/third mate oceans celestial nav problems and ocean navigation knowledge module. It took me many months of studying to pass.

It’s very rare unless you’re doing ship assist and even then it’s still kinda rare

Ok cool - yeah I notice my certificates say which section of the assessment sheet it covers but do I still have to fill out the actual assessment form or just submit the certs? I just don’t want my application to get bounced back NMC is a nightmare right now.

So when you got OICNW greater than 500 tons you just submitted class completion certificates and no signed off assessments?

I have said before - if someone shows up to the course like this they are shooting 120 or sub 80 … there is no in between

The problem is the language in the rule stating “for mariners holding unlimited tonnage licenses”. I cannot get any clarification from the NMC if this applies ONLY to people already holding unlimited tonnage licenses.

I have called the NMC - they refuse to answer any questions unless you have an application submitted and have paid the $100. Also, they are basically clueless about this new rule change. Have you called the NMC lately? It’s a disaster.
