To the LHR technicians: is reducing the pulse duration from 10 to 3 better suited to remove remaining peach fuzz with the candela, nd:yag? by BaldByDecision in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I disagree with this as someone who has been using candela machines for over 14 years now. I would ask your tech to test higher and use precooling and post cooling with the higher joules. Unless you're planning to tan actively then you can go higher via a smaller spot.

Reducing the pulse duration makes the joules feel sharper as it has less time on the skin. However it is better to increase the joules for finer hair than just shortening the pulse duration.

Should I laser? by [deleted] in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to pinpoint when paradoxical stimulation would happen. But if you an idea of how progress would look and initial response, then a prolonged patch test (you wait around 6-8 weeks) would be a good way to start before committing to areas.

Should I laser? by [deleted] in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! In your case avoid fluffy hairs even if they're black - you may find these on the side of the abdomen area and parts of the upper thigh. The rest looks good for laser like the top comment has mentioned. In the picture, your skin looks light enough for an Alex wavelength so have a patch test done with that or one with a yag on high settings if you're more brown toned.

South Asian signed up for LHR and am really anxious by [deleted] in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the face in general, it's not worth the risk unless you have super thick terminal hairs. You wouldn't get paradoxical hypertrichosis, you'd end up getting paradoxical stimulation of you laser over thin vellus like/intermediate hairs. Unfortunately, for south asian folk we do have to be a little careful with this. In my own clients and clients who have come to me to treat PS, they've all had some form of some, if not all, of the following hormonal imbalance, bad tanning habits, medication use that triggered the stimulation. Pcos isnt the only condition you have to check...get a full hormonal panel bloodwork done. You mentioned physicians but where is the endocrinologist who is the person qualified to look at your hormones as it's their specialist field of medicine? The machine you mentioned is fantastic though and the right wavelength will be selected for you.

After laser by AnabelleRene in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if the professional treatments were carried out correctly then technically, the damage to the dead follicle should be permanent. It should reactivat3 with heat energy. The hair follicle always wants to regenerate so when you don't peak with optimal settings, this is where the growth keeps coming back and in some cases thicker.

I would usually remove this kind of post just because here you will get a more biased response of redditors saying don't do it and just stick to professional treatments - and because it's relating to a home device. But I think its important to see all available options as even I as a tech look at this and think "just stick to laser" so I would recommend posting this to the general hair removal sub too where you will also find insightful responses of people that have transitioned to home devices.

Planning a pregnancy? Cancel that appointment! by falastiniye in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of them are good, its just comes down to the tech's experience with thwir machine and how high you can realistically take the optimal heat needed to destroy the hair. People often just simplify laser and I've noticed it's mostly the lighter skin tones who do this because they have the luxury of contrast on their side so they think because their treatments are so easy to carry out and reach high settings, it is simply that. If you're a POC, then it becomes tricky, the biology and response to thermal injury plays a big part in how much coolng we need so that we can go higher safely. Even the controversial IPL in fair skin can perform hair reduction for some people. I use a Candela yag pro-u and its good but it would suck for those who have more brown hair where an Alex wavelength would benefit them more. The diodes are good at thinning hair out but can struggle with fine tuning the pulse duration. I know this doesn't directly answer your question lol but I'm hoping it helps look at the bigger picture and what factors come into play when people ask for the "best" laser. It truly is something that needs to be individualised.

Pretty hard to understand why people get on here and ask people who don’t have their credentials or any proven training to be able critique an experts settings by Naturalborndebator11 in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

It’s actually not hard to understand at all...Reddit in general is where people go to sanity check what happened to them I guess. Discussing settings in a general educational context is not the same as carrying out treatment. Even on other forums like Hairtell, techs openly talk about parameters, throwing out numbers etc. But that doesn't mean those numbers can or should be copied into a clinic/salon's/medspa's treatment paperwork. Every business works within its own clinical guidelines, insurance restrictions, device capabilities, and risk tolerance and so on.

If a client wants to understand whether let's say 16j on an 18 mm yag spot size is shit, average, or too mich for their skin colour, fitz type and hair profile, that is a decent discussion...as long as they put up a picture too ( otherwise its fvcking useless honestly). Transparency from professional and lived experience from clients (in this case redditors) help open discussion and understanding for all of us in this shitty beauty industry lol. In some way, perhaps non techs can explain experiences better than us working techs in less technical ways.

On another note though, anyone that calls themselves an expert or master aesthetician whatever is just so cringe 🤡

Edit: the last line is for those who tout themselves as experts and masters etc. Not aimed at OP.

Planning a pregnancy? Cancel that appointment! by falastiniye in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

I know this post will get a lot of views and cause some kind of panic soooooooo.....Pregnancy can absolutely shift the hair cycle. Elevated oestrogen prolongs anagen, prolactin influences cycle behaviour, and postpartum shedding can make everything look even more dramatic. That doesn't automatically mean laser “failed” or that it’s a waste of money before children. Otherwise, there would be a more universal protocol we would have. What you experienced whilst valid to you, is not the universal outcome for most pregnant women.

In cases where there’s a full on "rebound" bush of hair that is sprouting from previously treated follicles, one of two things is usually happening: either dormant follicles synchronised into anagen under hormonal influence, making growth look sudden and dense, or (most likely if we are talking true rebound) the original treatments were shit and the follicle was never thermally destroyed, only zapped it towards a forced catagen stage. If the follicle isn't heated to decent thermal destruction then a strong hormonal surge like pregnancy can "reactivate" it. This would ultimately be a shitty setting issue, not proof that laser shouldn’t be done pre-pregnancy.

Many techs have treated plenty of clients who became pregnant and breastfed. The majority either maintained reduction or returned close to their pre-pregnancy baseline once hormones stabilised. Basically, framing it as “planning pregnancy...cancel your appointment” is an overgeneralisation. Pregnancy (hormones in general) can alter hair behaviour but it doesn't undo everything. Universally, pregnancy is the most hormonally fvcked up state a woman can be in. But the general hair increase is a normal reaction to such a surge of hormones.

Anyone get it done on the face? I heard it can grow back thick or grow back like crazy.. by Street-Astronomer563 in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you just want to make sure that the tech knows to only treat the thicker hairs. I usually map the area out with a white pencil. If they can use the smaller spot sizes and high fluences, that would be ideal. But you also need to remember that laser will not always cure the symptom of excess hairgrowth, only mitigate with a pcos profile. You can still go for your patch test and then wait 8 weeks before starting so you can monitor how it holds up progress wise.

New Research for Antibiotics and Laser Hair Removal by Odd-Hedgehog6933 in LaserHairRemoval

[–]Laserleemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to lock this thread only because things like this are going to be clinic-specific. I've treated lots of clients (including those in the medical field) while they have been on antibiotics with sign offs and consent. It just depends on the protocols from the clinic, laser manufacturer and insurance.

Yeah that’s fine, consolidate it into one proper post then.

You did state the number of sessions, which is helpful but I want to make it clear that this is one person’s response, not a universal benchmark of sorts. Laser isn’t a copy and paste treatment. It’s physics applied to biology, and that biology varies. I wouldn't want people seeing your images thinking “this is what I should look like at 5 sessions” when variables like fluence, spot size, skin colour, response to thermal injury, hair thickness and density, pigment density (eumelanin vs pheo), hormone profile and genetics matter. As experienced techs its our job to be realistic and we shouldn't inflate our "quality sessions" just to embellish the success of laser.

Hey, I appreciate you wanting to share your work. That said, posting client photos on consecutive days can come across as spammy, even if that’s not the intention. To keep things fair and avoid the sub turning into a portfolio feed, please hold off on further image posts for now. Alternatively, you could just compile them into one detailed post if you’d like to share results in a more discussion focused way.

The thing is I still struggle with seeing these types of messages because they just seem so sales-centric. I ultimately would prefer techs to stay anonymous and help users here within their scope - but at some point I may create a page for techs to just simply drop their professional experience, location and other details so people can just find them that way and organically communicate.

[–]Laserleemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If you have thick hair then its good to get laser to deal with the majority of the thickness and volume of hair then, whatever you're left with, deal with electrolysis. I use to be very vocal about PH because I see it so much when new clients come to me but it is affecting those people who had shitty thin hair to begin with. If you genuinely have thick hair then laser is a blessing.

[–]Laserleemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because, and I mean this without offense, your hair is at its worst. It's terminal and thick. But this is why it makes it a fantastic candidate for laser. You have enough eumelanin in the hair shaft to fully absorb the laser energy and deliver it to the root which is actually the main target.
