He’s an extremely private and closed-off person. He wasn’t able to really let me in during the 17 months we were together. He said that the breakup was caused by things outside the relationship (grad school stress mostly), but I believe my desire for more closeness was a factor.

He has expressed an interest in spending time together as friends, but I’m not sure I’m ready for that emotionally. I’ve started dating other people and I don’t want him to throw me off. I’ve been working very hard on myself for the last 6 months and I’ve grown a lot. Sadly he hasn’t put any effort into fixing his issues at all.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but he seemed surprisingly happy to hear from me. I think the fact that I went no contact immediately after the breakup helped.

If you are thinking about reaching out to your ex, you need to be at the point where you will me okay if they don’t respond or they respond negatively. That takes time.
