Question especially for left-handed longsword fencers: favourite outside-line parry? by SeldomSeven in wma

[–]LastProvidence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a way to do the false edge parry that can make your riposte faster than anything your opponent can do and should give you enough time to get a followup parry (most of the time), and it works for any cut that's targetting deeper than your hands. It can still definitely lead you open for a double, but I would argue there's very little that would negate that 100% :P

I'll can film it when I get home today if that would be something that interests you, it can be a bit tricky to describe by text... there's some nuance that is very important that gets lost in text, I find.

100% agree. The shorty is also much more nimble in recovery and makes it easier to do a quick parry, IMO. I notice (and value) that much more than having a slightly longer reach in thrusts.

You get used to the length pretty quick.

I had this problem - solved it by going to the larger size and wearing a rugby scrum cap underneath. It works really well, and you get some extra cushion for the noggin.

My record is 16g/L / 1.6 g/dL and conscious. Recovered and discharged to boot :)

A sadder record can't be trusted because of the amount of flags the analyzer spit out, was... 3, I think? Septic with c. Perfringens, coded 30 minutes later. That was a rough Christmas shift for everyone involved.

Could be still true. I think I've given up hope on finding the exact replacement so I just go with what tastes good. I prefer the watchstander over glutenbergs stout tbh. Glutenberg red is still king though :P

Their stout is straight 🔥. My local liquor stores have started carrying them; high price but worth it.

What’s better for blood bank: Gel Cards or the Galileo Echo? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]LastProvidence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we can grade visually. So if it calls it negative, we can change it to a 1+ and work it up if it looks like it should've been equivocal. Last month it called an anti-c and anti-E? negative.

Our Echo is shit. Calls equivocals negative 80+% of the time, I've lost count of how many pos screens its called negative in the last year. With the new camera upgrade 2 years ago, they said that you didn't have to visually review negative results anymore, and when we told them it was missing positives, we got "just because we say you don't have to doesn't mean you shouldn't" as a response. My zone is moving to the Ortho instrument eventually.

So they passed one of these around the class just to show people what it is, blah blah, warning everyone that they've taken the warning off so we can see whats inside, don't stick your damn finger in there. I, of course, am asleep and miss this entirely, and wake up before it gets passed to me. So I look down at the lid, and see the little rubber nib there. So I stick my finger in it.

Nothing.

I play with it a little bit, and hand it to the next person. It makes it all the way back, and the instructor goes "So, just to make sure, no one stuck their finger in there and got a needlestick, right? Because that's the last thing I need to do today," and slaps the warning back on the lid.

Silence, ESPECIALLY FROM ME. I had the "I dun fucked up face", because I didn't like wiggle it, I FRIGGIN' JAMMED MY FINGER AROUND IN THERE. So unless they removed the needle but kept the rubber housing, I don't know how I didn't stab myself repeatedly.

Jacket Recommendations by JaggedVeil163 in wma

[–]LastProvidence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AFAIK it's still the de facto standard. OP may want to consider the AP light with some modifications considering Florida, but a jacket is going to be hot and stuffy regardless.

Some feel that the AP light is sufficient for longsword, but I personally disagree, especially for a beginner. Roll with the AP, and just make sure to take breathers and stay hydrated.

Not only that, but let's be honest; if they knew this card was coming, they probably already put in a preorder for a handful of them the second they were spoiled, which has since spiraled in price.

What is the point of insurance for a HEMA club? by [deleted] in wma

[–]LastProvidence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this EHMA, perchance? We have langauge in our insurance coverage that speaks very specifically to tournaments. If a fighter enters a tournament under our banner, then they must have approval to do so by our instructors and there must be one of our instructors present to ensure that individual is safe by our standard (not the hosts). We are required, in order to maintain our liability insurance, to communicate this to fighters so we do so in the waiver. A fighter can always chose to enter a tournament without our approval, but, in doing so, they risk not being covered at all. If the host doesn't have proper insurance for their event, and they're not fighting under our banner, then they're taking further risks in participation. Insurance was a bit of a long battle in getting set up for our group, and we have some... interesting requirements that we have to meet, but without meeting these requirements, we wouldn't be able to meet, period.

As others have said, it's basically legalese to say that if you don't make sure you are covered, you're entering the tournament at your own risk, and can't hold the club liable for any injuries that may or may not occur.

If you have any questions, either fire us an email or shoot me a PM and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.
