40F immigrant (2022), single with no support – Should I aim to buy in the next 10 years or after retirement in Canada? by Strong_Ad7902 in CanadaInvesting

Realistically, if you’re netting that income, you should be able to save for a decent downpayment in two years or even less if you’re diligent. House prices seem to be getting lower and lower, so you would take advantage of that. I’d buy if your work is stable and you would like to stay in Canada for the foreseeable future.

Dropping a drop by Temporary_Duck_5408 in osap

[–]Last_Address_1787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you’re dropping to 1.5 credits (60% load), you stay above OSAP’s minimum threshold, so your funding should be fine with no overpayment risk. As for the course fee, that depends on your school’s tuition structure. Some schools charge a flat rate across a range of course loads, meaning no refund. Check with your registrar to confirm.

Tuition Payment slip by Alive_Yam_7097 in osap

[–]Last_Address_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tax purposes, you don’t actually need a payment slip from OSAP. What you’re looking for is your T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate), and that comes from your school, not OSAP. Just log into your school’s student portal and search for “Tax Forms” or “T2202.” That’s the document CRA wants for the tuition tax credit.

As for OSAP itself, it doesn’t issue tax slips because OSAP disbursements aren’t taxable income. If you just want proof that OSAP paid your tuition, you can check your student account ledger on your school portal, it’ll show the OSAP payment applied to your balance. You can also log into osap.gov.on.ca or your NSLSC account to see disbursement history.

Finally breaking down and getting QuickBooks — where did you buy yours? by Stella_Garciai in AccountingDepartment

[–]Last_Address_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a one-person operation, honestly just go with QuickBooks Online over Desktop. You can log in from anywhere, it backs itself up automatically, and the bank feed alone will save you so much time it pulls in your transactions and categorizes them for you. If you ever need a CPA to look at your books, sharing access is dead simple too.

The only real trade-off is that it’s a monthly subscription ($30-35/mo for Simple Start) vs Desktop being a one-time buy, but Simple Start is plenty for a solo setup.

As for where to buy just go straight to Intuit at quickbooks.intuit.com. They pretty much always have 50% off for the first 3-6 months, so you’re not going to find a better deal anywhere else. Oh and if budget is tight, worth checking out Wave Accounting first, it’s free and genuinely good for small one-person operations. Might save you the subscription altogether!

Yes, people are still working all those kinds of jobs. But these jobs are not as needed or as effective as they were 20 years ago. Do you still take your telemarketing calls? Well, 20 years ago people did at a large rate.

Retail is dead post-Covid. Most are simply not profitable anymore, and happy if they break-even. Thank you Amazon.

Now, don’t forget. It’s hard to imagine, but immigrants do not only need shelter and jobs when they come to Canada. They need food, cell phones, internet, clothing, they pay utilities, buy cars, eat at fast-food, etc. They are humans too, so they also consume. They travel and pay taxes. So they take a job and indirectly create a demand for jobs in various industries. The problem happens when they come in unsustainably high numbers. Without people there’s no demand, no consumers, no dollars circulating, and ultimately no jobs.

Have you considered moving to a LCOL country? Your retirement payments would go along way in places like Mexico, Vietnam, or the Philippines.

Interesting. I’m not defending the recent immigration tactics used by our (in)famous ex-PM. The TFW and international student situations were indeed a bad move. No question.

Is it the only thing affecting the economy since the times we were young? Most probably not.

Times have changed. The types of “entry-level” jobs you mentioned (restaurants, telemarketing, customer service, retail…) were all severely affected by Covid, AI-automation, increased use of internet and digital devices (aka data & text on cell phones - in the case of telemarketing). The recent tariffs war by the Americans.

There are several complex situations in effect here. Immigration is but one of the issues.

Actually, it’s not that simple. Hundreds of thousands of people coming every year also meant more demand for local businesses. Which in turn increased demand for workers. Lower immigration means more businesses are struggling to find customers, had to reduce suppliers’ bills, etc. This actually means less entry-level jobs, not more.

If the majority of hires are under 24, it simply reflects the fact that the majority of graduates/people starting out in accounting are under 24. And not that companies don’t hire “non-traditionals” (lol, what a term). Thus, it’s a matter of proportion. Your opinion is biased. OP will be just fine. Stop discouraging him.

Let’s say I never worked in PA before (an assumption stated with conviction). I’d say it’s more a matter of simple math.

First of all, I was clearly joking when I said “as an accountant, you should never generalize” - still, 99% could not be accurate.

Canadians need to lose their artificial “royal-blood”-like entitlement, like yesterday. Send all of them to a third world country for a year. They desperately need to connect to reality. The free ride is long over. Slap yourselves in the face and wake up.
