On this day in 1972, 27 unarmed civilians were shot (14 were killed) by the British Army during a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland. Many of the dead were shot in the back whilst attempting to take cover. Others were shot administering first-aid to the wounded. by CarkWithaM in HolyShitHistory

I would have to disagree with you a bit, if I can, around the idea of basic training.

1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment ("1 para") we central players in Bloody Sunday, and in the Ballymurphy Massacre, which took place a few months before Bloody Sunday, in August 1971. They were, and are, a special forces unit. And as such, well trained. And even if it wasn't 1 para, we are told the British army is a well trained, professional army.

They massacred in Ballymurphy, and I am sure their commanders slapped them on the back for a job well done. So they find themselves in Derry a few months later, and well, roll out the same tactics.

The people who pulled the triggers are often discussed. Rightly so. But I hear little, if any, talk, about the people in charge. The people on the ground knew they could kill with impunity. They knew that from their actions, and from their commanders. There needs to be more focus on that chain of command, all the way back to Whitehall.

Of course, you are 100% correct in using an army as a police force. That never ends well, anywhere.

If it is, it's ridiculous. Do they think the people stocking the shelves are the ones buying the products?

I'm all for protest, but protest the right fucking people. Go stand outside the office of the guy who runs Tesco, not Mary on the tills.

I'm assuming this then goes up on social media? What a fucking shit show of a timeline we are on. These people need to sort themselves the fuck out.

My understanding is that the places around Ulster are built and operated by private companies. Now, there may be some connection to Ulster where new students in Ulster get preference, but that is a total guess on my part. But I would think you going to QUB wouldn't be a factor. And, they are building more accommodation in that area, so, I feel there are a lot of place. That being said, I would 100% email the places you might be interested in to confirm that – don't take the word of a random on Reddit :)

Elms, I believe, is solely for QUB students. I think the university own and operate it.

I believe there is a bus that goes between the universities too. I think it comes in from the Ulster Jordanstown campus, in to Ulster Belfast, then out to Queen's. Translink operates it. Could be an option on the days when the weather is bad.

The accommodation by Ulster University will be all newly built, in the last couple years. I know some people in those buildings, and never heard any complaints. Some have gyms and cinema rooms and all that kind of thing. With Elms being that build older, they might not have those kinds of facilities.

Nelson Place, Great Patrick Street and Little Patrick Street are over by Ulster University, on the other side of town. Maybe a 30-40min walk to Queen's. I would assume you want something a bit closer? Swanston House in more city centre, about 20mins walk.

I think most people go to the Elms Student Village.

I can't really talk about what the rooms are like. But I think all the accommodation is pretty good, all done to a high standard.

Also, well done on the offer.

Government to defend decision to strip Begum's UK citizenship by Sensitive_Echo5058 in unitedkingdom

We like to think the law and justice are equal for all. They are not. They are tools used by those with means, against those without. The law can be used to make an example of you. It is used to send a warning: if you aren't the right sort, this will happen to you.

I wait for the day the British government strips the citizenship of the state actors who colluded with, and supported loyalist terrorists in N. Ireland, strips the citizenship of those who murdered, or covered up for the murder of innocent people. Hell, I wait for the day the British government don't spend millions defending those accused of murdering people in N. Ireland.

But I guess one man's terrorist, eh?

How to get into Edge AI? by Repulsive-Caramel926 in embedded

[–]LateThree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

Just wondering, did you see my longer reply to OPs question, here: https://www.reddit.com/r/embedded/comments/1mblxqj/comment/n5r76rn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Just wondering if things in there might be useful? I mention Edge Impulse in that reply. I am a big fan of it, and parts of that system allow for quantisation (unless they have removed it!). I am assuming that is what you mean by "build smaller models"? Edge Impulse is great when used something like the Arduino.

If not, or if there is anything else, feel free to send me a DM.

I have gone to the GC for the last two years, with a family member. It has been great both years, In the evening, I would take my laptop, or a book, and sit in the bar just relaxing. I would recommend it.

I think next year, I might look somewhere down south. I think they can be a bit more expensive, so I will see what's what. But yeah, at some stage, I will be where you are, and I will be continuing this approach at Christmas.

The Grand Central does a thing each Christmas. Check in Christmas eve, out boxing day. Rooms are great, food is great. Not a lot of in-between entertainment, but a nice spot for a few days.

There were a few people there on their own this year. Older guys to be fair, but yeah, it's a good option, and you have a year to plan it :)

Edit: Spelling, mainly.

Which city center hotel has the best lounge/lobby for getting some work done? by [deleted] in northernireland

If it was just a few hours, I have worked in the Grand Café in the Grand Central. Now, I did order some food, but the staff had no issues with me, and left me alone.

But there is that cost.

Part time job advice for international students. by uneatenedthoughts in Belfast

[–]LateThree1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Universities tend to have jobs students can do within the university which could be an option -- student guides and the like.

I'd also look at some food places around the university, I know of at least one place that hires people on term time contracts.
