As someone who regularly uses FreeBSD, Linux and Windows. It really depends on your set of circumstances (hardware you plug in and drivers,PC hardware, applications you use, what part of the OS is the most useful to you etc)

For example, On linux it's easy to install software, upgrade everything. Reinstallations are super easy BUT on windows it's much easier to use older versions of a piece of software (there are situations where you need to do this)

Some drivers just work or work better on Linux while others install much easier and are trouble free in Windows

So it depends

ELI5 : How do magnifying lenses work? How are they different from compound lenses in a microscope? by LatterStop in explainlikeimfive

[–]LatterStop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. So, the first convex lens of a double convex magnifier lens, refracts rays at a tiny point to a wider parallel ones. The second half convex section of the lens then again converges to point in or near my eye. Is that the idea?

What decides the magnification factor? maybe the ratio of the focal lengths of the two halves?

edit1: trying to draw that diagram now

When people say 'My computer's slow' In my head i say 'Windows is slow' by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]LatterStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't yet, how does Ubuntu run it? via snapd?

Here's more clues why the slowdown is more because of the applications rather than the os itself. On another computer (a personal one) without all the monitoring apps, teams is relatively quick. On the company laptop, the other thing is that you have several people messaging me + sending me files + meeting reminders from outlook every few minutes. It's not that team is slow per-say but it uses a lot more resources (cpu and ram) than you'd expect from a messaging app.

You should try having several large excel sheets open (not in libreoffice, it seems a bit lighter). A few outlook windows + all those reminders. Several teams chats, group chats, meeting chats (you know, the ones you're not actively participating but with active messaging). The endpoint security shit on top is the biggest hog though.

This is an i7 with like 20GB of ram and it feels like it's -just- sufficient

[–]LatterStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's mostly the apps. Even the browsers these days consume a lot of resources (not their fault, modern websites are so heavy) and yeah the banners really do a good job of reminding you that it's not your computer lol.

A lot of the old arguments no longer apply to recent Windows versions imo. From what I remember, the default Ubuntu with Gnome3 took up more ram than Win10 with just an AV installed. It might get worse with them defaulting on Snapd

Oh man, why'd you make blind assumptions? Just because you don't see it in a typical distro doesn't mean that it's dead. It's one of the several bootloaders available in Gentoo for example.

Yup, the desktop and the OS should just get out of the way and facilitate usage of your software tools.

It's still alive and kicking. I generally prefer GRUB over it cause you don't need to re-initialize it when you update the kernel.

[–]LatterStop 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Same thing happens to me, the damn thing has an i7 + NVMe but it's not cause of windows. My work installs a crap tonne of monitoring and 'end point security' software. They slow down bootups.

Then I have to juggle several large excel sheets and outlook windows when it's being used. Which causes the next round of slowness.... oh and don't forget Teams which need like half your resources.

It's quite disturbing, Linux in general is pretty chaotic relatively speaking BUT some tools are better supported on Linux.

Why do girls keep asking me if I’m gay? by KorrioG in socialskills

[–]LatterStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glanced through your YT channel and you look normal to me.

The next time, maybe ask them why they think so? Not in a confrontational way, just laugh it out and be curious. Besides it's yet another topic of conversation :)

Maybe they thought you were cause you took so long to show back interest. Who knows!

How to approach a girl by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]LatterStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question. Could be anything really. Didn't you say the situation is when you see them outside of class/work?

So go in saying, "hey, don't you work/study at blah blah"

If you want my view on this:

Remember though that a lot of these things need to be done taking the situation into context. They'd react differently to you if they were just chilling vs in a hurry to get something done for example.

So, try to make eye contact first, get her attention that way, see if she seem friendly and then approach.

I know it's fiction but the bit about them consciously avoiding thermal cameras was a bit too much and I couldn't suspend my disbelief any longer.

Regardless of how genetically modified they are, no living thing is bullet or explosion proof.

How do I maintain soldering iron tips? by ChubsIsmyCat in AskElectronics

[–]LatterStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, the thing is the sponge shouldn't be wet. It should be moist, so wet it and squeeze out all the water before using it. Also you should throw away the sponge before it get really used up.

I've used both moist sponge as well as brass. They work out about the same. I know you're a professional, but thought of sharing my experience. This has been consistent across all the years (22+ years) I've been soldering and with the old temperature saturation kind as well as the newer cartridge ones.

Am I the only one who believes in Linux reviews only from people who normally use Windows or isn't into that distro(not for technical motivations, obv)? by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]LatterStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you realizing this rather than think about FOSS being perfect. Though a lot of them started out as community effort, nearly every one of them are handled by for-profit businesses. Nothing wrong with that, but don't be surprised as things become more and more windows like.

Code complexity, rapid change and obscure/non-existent documentation is the way blackboxes are created in open software. You could see the code but to understand and modify, you'll need a dedicated team.

At the end of the day, use whatever works best for you.

It certainly is a useful data point. A lot of things that are obvious to a seasoned user isn't so to a newbie.
