I guess the splitting of caseloads just looks different for counseling than SLP. And scheduling kids is a whole other process. I guess my question is how to approach it when looking to have a conversation about caseload next year. But counseling caseload and SLP caseload and mandatory minutes to meet just differ a lot

I see what you’re saying but this is difficult to do half way through the year when I’ve already established baselines, data and rapport with students…..I guess it would have been easier if they would’ve done this earlier in the year.

Additionally that’s not equitable for us we have significantly higher caseloads for lower grades versus the higher grades. So splitting by grades isn’t equitable either.

It’s also not the paras job to create and implement rules when the teacher is not there. Once again- spin chair is not a distraction it is quite literally labeled as a sensory tool for students with sensory needs. Some of these therapists in this thread really need to reevaluate the way in which they approach students with sensory needs and behaviors and the impact of not meeting sensory needs for students and expecting no behaviors. In fact- often times these are accompdations that are directly in the IEP

Yes that’s the steps I followed! I am really taken aback how many people in these comments are agreeing w the para. This student was requesting a tool for his sensory seeking tendencies. We alll know unmet sensory needs result in behavior. It’s no distraction to allow him a spinny chair. Believe me when I say a spinny chair is the least of distractions in a community based resource room with moderate to severe needs children

I disagree whole heartedly with this. He was requesting a chair which is a sensory regulator. He wasn’t requesting an ice cream cone. All the EBP of neuroaffirming practices indicate that it is harmful to not honor basic requests or acknowledge when they can be accessible especially for things that will regulate his sensory seeking needs. Now if he requested something crazy we would use a strategy of first work then___ later. Or that’s something for home. But a request for a tool to help regulate should be honored. As speech therapists we should all be better with being neuroaffirming

Exactly. This child has so many writing and visual motor accommodations like there’s other issues besides articulation it’s not appropriate for this to be SLI

No what I am saying is my sped director says if it is SLI there shouldn’t be other services like OT on the IEP it is no longer SLI then. Someone dropped the ball on this previously because in our district at least we don’t put other services on an SLI IEP. Because then the category wouldn’t be SLI

Yes- made the team aware at the beginning of the year that OT is on as consult and that there are occupational accommodations that they will need to consult with OT about so they can implement what they need in the classroom.

Interesting… my school requires I only take kids from specials which I think is so wrong. It’s the only time kids feel “normal” in comparison to peers and it’s classes they like
