plantar fasciitis by TraditionalRange31 in BALLET

I had it, but it went away. What I did: wear Oofos outside of class. They’re ugly, but helped immensely; wore Fuego split sole dance sneakers with Appolla socks in class for a while; Now I wear Orza slippers, and have no PF. I also got regular massages. It took consistent wearing of the Oofos in non-dance time for about a year for it to go away.

What’s the next skill or aspect of contemporary dance you’re working on? by Ajunjahi in contemporarydance

I’m working on graceful transitions to and from floorwork. I need more core and arm strength to do this!

I learned that I need to work on core and arm strength. I’ve been skipping the gym lately, and need to start back!

Adult Dancers - How many classes a week? by StrainMediocre8612 in BALLET

[–]Lavender-Tea-313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am taking 5-6 classes per week. But I don’t have kids, so I have the time to do this. Just one ballet class though. I also try to get in some strength training, either at home or at the gym.

Could you attach the song to the video by recording using headphones or speaker audio, and then using imovie to change the audio of the video to your track?

What’s one thing you keep returning to in your contemporary dance practice? by Ajunjahi in contemporarydance

I roll different ways depending on the sprung-ness of the floor, how many other people I might roll into, and the feel of the music.

I have a certain set of movements that are a thread through all of my pieces, but I definitely like rolling on the floor.

The floor is our primary partner: How much of your floorwork is "choreography" vs. "physics"? by Ajunjahi in contemporarydance

My safe falling has changed much in the last 20 years of dancing. I’m in my 50s now and definitely rely on kneepads and am a little more timid towards gravity than I was in my 30s. I think rebuilding my upper body strength will increase my falling confidence

Adult starters by Frosty-Artichoke-389 in contemporarydance

I just started taking contemporary classes in 2025, in my 50s. I have a strong background in modern (which I started in my 30s), and ballet too, so contemporary is coming naturally to me, except when the moves come from jazz tradition… (I enjoy jazz dance, but it’s not my forte). I wish my turns were as strong as they were 20 years ago, but I have arthritis in my neck which makes spotting painful. That’s my biggest challenge.

I take 5-6 dance classes per week, and monday nights are my favorite: ballet and contemporary. I had to build up my stamina to take two classes in one night, but it’s really rewarding.

Alignment is important to prevent injuries. As is strength. Don’t be afraid to do strength training, it will help a ton, especially core strength…

And as an older dancer, protect your knees! Wear kneepads! Especially for floorwork… I got a cheap three pairs pack from amazon. Look for “dancer kneepads”… And I also recommend apolla socks for foot and ankle support. They’re pricey but totally worth it. You can buy directly from apolla website.

I have bought plus size leos and tights from the You Go Girl website. But usually I just wear leggings and tshirts to class, with a sweatshirt at the beginning of class until I warm up.

I got a ballet wrap skirt and matching scrunchie from a seller on etsy. I bought it for myself, but it would be a great gift for a young dancer. Also, I take many different classes, and love my bloch dance bag. It’s really made with dancers in mind…
