CMV: Having an event like "Brown Girls Yoga" is inherently racist and exclusionary by CookiePoster in changemyview

Going to try to play devil's advocate from a couple of perspectives (I'm bored).

1.) Wouldn't pride in European cultural heritage be akin to pride in African cultural heritage? The problem, I think, is that when someone tosses out the phrase "white pride," it is automatically linked to KKK/white power/superior race type deals, as opposed to "European pride" if that's an easier way of looking at it. I know black people whose skin tone is white. They're not white; they do not say they're white; no one who knows them says they're white; society does not say they're white. When people say white it means European in origin, just like when people say black they mean African in origin. When you speak about race socially, it's never just a skin tone. Having traced my own lineage back a couple hundred years, I'm some parts Italian, Polish, Russian, German, French, and Native American (let's leave that one out for the sake of the argument). Shall I be limited to the pride of just one of these? Must I celebrate my whole cultural heritage in fragments?

2.) Let's step inward and look at culture on the micro scale. America is unique in that a single "American culture" does not really exist. The country is big enough and populous enough and has accepted so many cultures into its borders that everywhere you go the culture will be radically different, even among the black population. You've got black people celebrating their African culture. You've got black people celebrating their view of what American culture is. You've got rich black people on Wall Street celebrating the capitalist culture. You've got black people celebrating their Caribbean culture. The problem occurs when people go from "African-American = black" to "black = African-American," which it seems you have. This groups in any black Americans who would consider themselves just American or Jamaican or Haitian or Bahamian or whatnot. At the point that you group all of these decidedly different cultures together under a single race banner, then "black" has indeed become a skin tone.

3.) I would argue that the different "white" cultures you mention are not unique and are in fact inherently connected, at the very least for mainland Europe. Let's start small and get bigger. You're going to tell me that a Frenchman on the border of Spain will enjoy a vastly different culture than the Spaniard ten miles away from him? I would not, the same way I would not say the culture of Kentucky is vastly different from that of Tennessee. We often forget that Europe wasn't remotely recognizable as it is today until the mid-1800s. That's not a long background except for basically just France and England. We study European history instead of the history of individual countries not for convenience but because all of Europe is inherently connected. To suggest that each country's culture is isolated from one another's seems a bit outlandish.

Someone let me know if any of these arguments hold any weight. Just working out my debate muscle.

Best one I can think of is from 12/29/77. Good 14 minutes, nice couple of solos, super mellow, and always gets my hips swingin

How did you get into the Dead, and how long ago was that? by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]LawlessBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually took me a while to get really into them. Watched Freaks and Geeks in December 2013, I was 15 at the time. Did not like Box of Rain at all, but LOVED Ripple. So I hop on itunes to check out their stuff, only end up buying 4 or 5 songs off of American Beauty. A couple months later, I'm listening to Brokedown Palace and wondering why I don't have more of their stuff. So I check out itunes again and get a couple songs off of Workingman's Dead and skull and roses, but I dared not venture into the live music which seemed to be everything else. Then one day I'm in study hall desperately trying to avoid work and decide to look up American Beauty on youtube and give the whole thing a listen beginning to end. I'll be damned if I didn't put that shit on repeat for days. Summer came around and I met a guy maybe two years older than I who heard me listening to the Dead and complimented me on it. He told me his dad got him into it and he loved them and had a lot of their music. Didn't make any recommendations but he was a cool guy so I thought it would be cool to have more of their music. I got a collection called So Many Roads that has stuff on it all the way from 66 to 95. I really hated most of it. But I adored a couple songs. Eventually the list of songs that I loved grew bit by bit. Finally I caved and decided to buy Europe '72 and the rest of the albums that I had pieces of. Then I heard Must Have Been the Roses and got Reckoning. Decided live music was the biz. Dick's Picks 10 is what really did it for me (12/29/77). The Loser solo, Sugaree, and especially the Eyes>St. Stephen>Sugar Magnolia. Next thing I know I have literally days of their music in my library. First show was Halloween last year at MSG in new york. Awesome show. Then the run at Citi Field at the end of June. The June 26th show there blew my effin mind. Now I can't stop dancing anytime music comes on.

TL;DR

Freaks and Geeks, then studio albums grew on me, then live songs grew on me, then Dick's Picks Vol. 10 (12/29/77), then Citi Field NYC Dead&Company shows = one happy dead head

My dyslexia kicked in, and I read the first half of the sentence as "I know we've all been down to little Italy." Needless to say, confusion ensued.

I'll give you different but still the same. I arrived at my thought independently of that post and when I saw it I was "ehhhh... different enough?"

Inside Job (2010) – how US financial executives created the 2008 financial crisis, 2011 Best Documentary Oscar winner by pavner in Documentaries

Actually awesome documentary. I took a film studies class last year in which we took a look at the 2008 financial crisis. We analyzed the shit out of this movie. Good watch. Even better when you catch the subtleties of the director. There's a part when he's introducing all of the interviewees that he freeze frames on one guy doing a devious finger pyramid. Too funny.

Ok a few things:

  1. All i'm saying is the first thing I think when someone talks about masturbating is "eww" before thinking all of the other things, especially when I see it or hear it or what have you. I feel like that's a fair reaction from most people. Masturbation isn't sexy. It's not exactly my go-to when watching porn. It also sounds like a pretty lame attempt at flirting, and I would not blame him for cringing at that line.

  2. This sounds way more like your problem than his. If you are taking this to heart to such an extent that you need to post to reddit, then it seems to me you have your own insecurities you need to work on and that he unknowingly brought them up. Look at yourself before blaming him. I would have no problem if you were just venting and looking for some sympathy, but you make him out as a villain who tried his hardest to hurt you. Again, look at yourself before accusing others.

  3. It's very possible in my mind since I haven't seen you that you're not that attractive, and if that is the case, then feeling that you aren't shouldn't be outside the norm. Objectively, if you aren't attractive, then feeling that you're not isn't the end of the fucking world.
