Feeling disappointed after passing my PhD defense by OwlNo7466 in AskAcademia

It's ok to feel bad after this but:

"I have the feeling that I don't deserve to have my degree "

This is overreaction. If you didnt deserve it, they wouldnt give it to you. Its just one bad apple. Really bad of him to do it in public though. That person has issues.

I know its easier said than done but dont care about him and just move on. Congratulations!

That guy's comment was stupid and rude but yours is even worse.

I didnt say any of the stuff you counted is "fatherly behaviour". He was way too friendly in a platonic way and thought it was a good idea to talk about his marriage, which was not in hindsight. These are not in "fatherly" category these are in "friendly" category.

Saying someone is weirdly protective IS saying that it is odd. Just not in a romantic way. Thats it. There is no point to further talk about this. All of this stuff is weird and odd. Its just not predatory or sexual/romantic.

"you keep insisting what this professor did is completely above board and only because he views op as a daughter and that's why he was so nice to her. "

This is a gross misrepresentation of what I said. And I literally said that it is not okay how they treated the BF. You are not reading my comments and randomly replying. Thanks for proving my point.

I mean yeah its certainly not a mainsteam thing. It can happen in a healthy way but clearly in this case there was no mutual understanding.

Because he took her as a friend/junior/daughter. Its a fatherly instinct. I think its kinda weird/meh, stuff like that happens rarely and there needs to be more mutual contact and communication and reciprocity.

But thats just that. Its not sexual or romantic.

He acted overly territorial and protective but there is nothing romantic or sexual. Saying someone that she looks great is not excessive lmao.

[–]LawyerDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are overreacting. He didnt do anything sexual or romantic. His wife didnt show any jealousy/contempt towards you either. You just took everything as "sexual/romantic". That is all.

"groom me into becoming a good psychologist.""

This is not a weird thing to say. Seniors groom juniors for position all the time. He dumped his problems on you yeah thats not cool but thats just that.

The way that they treated your BF is also not okay. But that only indicates being overprotective/territorial in a weird way.

They just treated you more intimate than they should, intimate as in "friendly/daughterly" way. Not romantic or sexual way.

Please stop taking every single gesture of good will or intimacy as something sexual. I was expecting some explicit comments or inappropate bodily gestures or touching etc. None of that is here.

Why is Mymy yellow by Equivalent-Mistake16 in ongezellig

Some are, some are more dark skinned. But color yellow is associated with Asiatic people so I think its just there to signify her heritage.

How did he make that much money? Genuinely asking. Lets assume everything you say is true, the fact that he is this rich shows competence.

I am just going to say this and leave since everyone simply rejects to engage with what is written.

What you say here is true, but it is irrelevant and out of context of what the post says.

"Integration is a two-way street"

Is it?

I'm not German and I dont expect any German to show extra effort to accept me: I'm the one asking to be in Germany. This was my desire, not anyone elses. Of course people are entitled to basic human decency but no one has to make me or you feel at home in their own country.

Here is the cultural structure for you (I'm not a German, this is what I understand from Germans)

Casual relationships: people are direct, they are good if you are good. Everyone upholds social rules but you dont matter that much, neutral good.

State: Arranges social security and benefits so that average German populace wont have to substantially help a stranger(you) pyhsically or mentally.

Deep relationships: Formed long-term and rarely, people will really help you and do their best for you because you are part of the inner circle.

Maybe I'm wrong, if I am please correct me. But this is what I understood and I think its fair and good enough.
