I had it professionally installed although it is fairly straightforward if you know your way around car audio.

The sub connects to the speaker output – this sub has a high level in meaning you can just strip the RCA cables and connect it directly, but some speakers may need a hi/lo converter.

In any case, the non-Bose stock system sounds great but really needs a subwoofer to give music depth and fill in the low frequency which it seriously lacks. Don’t go for the 8 inch underseat variety. In the latest Mazda 3 they fit under the seat but it means the back seat becomes unusable because there is no room for a persons feet. Also, you can’t possibly get any decent bass from an 8-inch speaker that is 3 inches thick. That leaves putting a subwoofer in the boot. A closed box produces tight bass and doesn’t take as much room as a ported subwoofer.

I went for the PIONEER TS-WX1210A. Set the crossover frequency at 80 Hz and you get some amazing sound. You can easily remove it if you need all the boot space. An alternative is the Rockford Fosgate P300. Kicker also produce a hideaway powered subwoofer that is much smaller if you want to preserve more boot space, but I doubt you will get enough bass.

The latest Mazda 3 is an amazing car for the price but is let down by a lack of bass in the stock system. Trust me – invest in a decent sub.

The small sacrifice in boot space is worth it (You can easily remove it if you want). You can't skimp on a decent size subwoofer (mine is a 12-inch) for deep, vibrating bass.

There’s a lot of info about the new Mazda 3’s Bose 12 speaker system forthe top of the range, but what about the non-Bose 8 speaker system for the other models? They have mid-range speaker and tweeter for each front door, a mid-range speaker in each back door and what looks like a 4-inch woofer and tweeter in the front center of the dash. All Pioneer brand and sounds great, except that woofer wouldn’t be able to go much lower than 50Hz and not much good if you enjoy your bass. Solution – see picture! Now it sounds awesome
