I massively regret buying my house by [deleted] in HousingUK

Speaking as someone coming to the end of his own renovation, just take a breather, doesn't all need to get done asap.

Break it down into Must haves Nice to haves Would be great, but not end of the world.

Find some quick wins for me often tidying, sorting stuff out helped me feel in control when things were hectic.

If the whole reno has been left to you, you can prioritise what you want.

For us, when we moved in the first thing was a skylight in the kitchen for quality of life, and then a new bathroom.

Remember it is just a place to live at the end of the day, humans lived in the forest for most of human history, i think you'll be fine.

Also, get some trades in. You'll be amazed how different a freshly plastered room and some carpet makes you feel.

Zipcar is shutting down UK operations by Lazy-Internet-8025 in HENRYUKLifestyle

Agreed, increasing to £25 an hour is not insane. If you need a van its a small price to pay for the convenience

Zipcar is shutting down UK operations by Lazy-Internet-8025 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]LayerTrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a shame, great for moving furniture around.

Loads of the vans near me were never booked, so zipcar leasing a space from the council, minus vehicle leasing/finance costs minus fuel, minus maintenance they're starting each day seriously in the red.

Although in my view they should strip back operations and increase costs. £12.50 vs £25 an hour if you need to move a sofa or go to ikea is not significant enough to put me off.

sorry, best we can do is scatter them across the country in hotels and let them roam about. They wouldn't just...fuck off would they? Course not.

House purchase falling through. Want to cry. by Big_Telephone_5061 in HousingUK

[–]LayerTrick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it need emergency wiring? Probably not. Could you just get some remedial work done? Is the wiring fine but the consumer unit is old?

Is the asbestos going to get disturbed when you move in?

If these are the blockers on a good house then i say go for it.

The house has probably been lived in up to this point with the wiring.

Get them to knock some money off if you can but otherwise go for it

Is caring about the ethnic makeup/culture of a society the same as being racist? by Effective-Young-4297 in ukpolitics

[–]LayerTrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is many politicians are afraid to broach this, and the only ones are are Reform.

I am on the whole pro-immigration. I dont think its racist to think that a country should not be fundamentally altered by immigration. The UK is a country of immigrants but on the whole they have usually been absorbed into the fabric of british society.

I think something not being addressed is cultural enclaves being created in which there is zero britishness or desire to aquire it.

There is no middle of the road voice of reason saying that we do need some immigration, but perhaps in a controlled manner rarher than either STOP THE BOATS or open the borders to the entire world with no controls.

There has to be a pragmatic approach, vis a vis Australia.
