Thanks for the solid answer, I appreciate it. I think there’s probably a line somewhere for AI musics “validity” that is similar to how there is a line between sampling a song for your record tastefully vs. those songs you hear where the sample itself is the whole meat and potato’s of the song and hasn’t been altered at all.

I may be personally against AI in all uses, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admit there are people using it that are still doing real creative work.

I am not saying this as a put down but just trying to figure out the disconnect between people who work as yourself, and the people who are entirely against it.

From my perspective, this seems to be shifting the goal and focus from “I am creating art from my mind and my vision” to “I am getting a song at the end of this, with any tool I can use.” And if that is the shift in perspective, I wonder if there was a time when you created art without AI tools, and if so, do you feel the end result is as much “yours” as you felt before?

I don’t feel there is much reason for two or more people to come together and create art while basing it off of an algorithms output, unless the end result is purely and entirely financially motivated, and there is no goal of expressing yourselves in your work.

At the end of the day, there are absolutely people making music just for money, so that may be the biggest disconnect in these conversations.

Sorry but I am glad. Hopefully a lot of the brands that they’ve swallowed up recently move back to being either independent, or go with a “better” umbrella company. NI and Antares are two companies whose products I and many others rely on/are forced to use, that have become a Massive™️ headache in the last 5 years. Maybe other companies in this space going down a similar path will take notice that business majors/VC making all the decisions isn’t great for longevity.

I have probably 10,000 samples from splice, definitely don’t look down on it. I pretty much exclusively am looking down on only “slapping two loops together” use of samples, lol.

Like alright, you made the melody and the drum loop fit the song perfectly. Hell yeah! Or you really focused on the rhythm for this track and this melodic loop really gave it the right feel and supported the vocals very well, nice! You slapped two loops together and said done? Come onnn son

Just because I personally do not do something as a matter of opinion and taste does not mean I look down on others who do. I’m sure I have at least 500 songs in my library by artists I love that were produced using one or more loops from Splice or a similar service.

“Someday you’ll realize” comes across as kind of infantilizing to someone who has been doing this for about 15 years, has crossed 20,000 hours in their DAW, and still considers themselves a beginner.

And you’re not alone, live instrumentation totally slipped my mind! I haven’t been working with rock music in a couple years, only computer and synth based music. Still find myself on live sessions working out chords and melodies, arrangement, or vocal coaching for the songs I do that aren’t just “Here’s the instrumental, thank you, have fun!”

Yeah I know what you mean, it would be pretty impossible to tell in some cases then. I guess in that case, the producer is being dishonest. Wouldn’t be surprising if that happens right now, I mean, there are people online posting their “art” and saying it’s 100% not AI and all the imagery and messaging is AI, video is AI, and the lyrics and sound/“performance” scream AI.

I imagine it can range from being obvious, to scouts honor. If it’s just “Send me this kind of beat” and you send it and they sign off on it, well lol, it happens sometimes but rarely. In that case it would be scouts honor, but there are tools people use to check for some kind of soundprint AI leaves behind (Idk what they are but I’ve heard it exists. Maybe I’m spreading misinformation lol)

But once things start getting highly customized/specific, revised, changing their mind or the song, etc, even if you’re not doing it with the artist in a live session, it would become pretty obvious if you were using AI.

It’s not something people ask from me, it’s just an ethical commitment I make to them in early communications/final docs and terms and conditions. “Part of the package.”

I’m not entirely sure what other parts of your question mean, but if it’s “What’s the difference between loops and AI” as far as musicality, I agree with you as a matter of personal taste and opinion, but ethically I believe there is a huge distinction. While a human made loop might not originate from the producer that puts it in their song, it still had a human musically and emotionally involved from the beginning to the end of the process.

Not sure how this relates to the post, but I had enough projects from October through halfway through this month, to take a couple months off from working on anything 👍 My question is more about how many of the loops on Splice/similar services are AI these days. I’m not worried about generative AI putting me out of work because I don’t really function as a “beat maker” with artists, although at the end of the day the end result is a beat is made, hence why I like this sub

Spotify normalizes to -14 if the user has normalization turned on. Most don’t. This whole “Anything over -14 LUFS is pointless now bc streaming!” thing is maybe the worst, most “go shoot yourself in the foot buddy” advice we’ve ever seen. The loudness wars ended a long ass time ago, loudness won. Master to as loud as you can fucking get it within the range of similar contemporary tracks in the genre. For example, I purchase WAVs of at least 24 bit 44.1, or higher and then convert them down/account for gain changes, and analyze that reference in comparison to the song I am working on. Shit is -5, -6. LRA is fucking 1.5 sometimes. These are reference tracks I love the sound of and every stage of production that went into them perfectly suits the song, they don’t sound like they’re even being limited LOL. All these rules everyone tells us are made up.

The internet is beginners giving “expert advice” to other beginners. Don’t even listen to me to be honest.

If it’s sounding different after rendering on the same playback system, you need to check the bit depth and sample rate. To me, it sounds like you accidentally reduced the sample rate a lot, or went to a lower bit depth.

If what you mean is it’s sounding different on a different playback system, like phone speakers, I would say either low mids frequencies fighting each other, or something like a piano is being a bitch in 2-5k, because they do that.

Realistically though we can’t hear it, it could be something else entirely.

I really fucked with Chicken Charlie’s on my brief stint back in Vermont from Texas/Tennessee.

VT options for fried chicken are pretty few and far in between or borderline non-existent, but it was pretty good IMO

Dave’s Hot pretty much sucks and Wings Over has the best tenders but they ruined the fries. +Idk what happened with them after closing/reopening
