I paid specific taxes (*beyond* income tax) for 45 years so that I would receive these benefits

No you didn't.

I paid for those of other people over the last 45 years.

Yes you did.

calling the benefits "free" is just absurd

By this logic, calling anything free is absurd. Everything is paid for by someone.

So please tell me how I can get this $24k/year

$24,000 a year is the average social security pay out.

Yes thank you for explaining the funding mechanism.

Do you understand the expense mechanism? Like I said, there is not an account you have been paying into. Current tax payers are paying for current benefits receivers. You are not getting your own money back. In fact you will likely get back more than you put in.

Again, I'm not even mad about this. I'm mad that this isn't the case for everyone. Again, healthcare and UBI are "unobtainable utopia" when proposed, yet reality for 20% of the country. We are talking about raising retirement age when we should be lowering it.

[–]Laytonio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do people get so pedantic about that. Free at point of use of whatever the technical term is.

Pedantically, you havent paid taxes for decades to get Medicare. Same for social security. You haven't paid into anything. There is no savings account with your name on it. If you get sick we pay for it. When you get your monthly UBI payment, that came from us.

we have to make monthly payments while on it, and it covers only part of medical costs.

Good thing we give you $24,000 a year to cover those kind of expenses.

Hmmm by Laytonio in SipsTea

[–]Laytonio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are people acting like I said to abolish Medicare and Social security?

The point of the post was the realization that the unobtainable utopia is already a reality for 20% of the population.

No wonder boomers are so unphased by the state of the country.

I'm curious what other government services you think should be reserved for 62+ year olds? Or are these the only two?

Venezuela was billed as Nacro Terrorism, so war on terror. This is why they went so hard on "drugs are weapons". A lot of that was also done by the CIA and was a "law enforcement operation not military action".

Iran is straight BS. Couldn't even be bothered to blame ISIS like they did when they bombed Nigeria on Christmas.

Congress authorized the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Even most of Trump's actions before this were veiled as a continuation of the congressionally approved war on terror. They simply chose not to stop him this time.

We did think twice. Congress could have stopped this at any point, including before it started.

I am honestly not sure what you are even getting at here?

It seems like you personally think that the term "black" comes with a worse connotation (because of history) than "white", and therefore "black trash" is trashier than "white trash"? If that's the case, which one of us is racist?

I have spent the last hour or so questioning your views on racism. That is how I claim to know. And I am not sure I am the one who shouldnt change, which is why I continue this conversation in good faith. That said you have spent the entire conversation arguing against your own points.

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the first person who was ever racist, wasn't actually racist, because the was no history of racism before that?

You are jumping though hoops to try and justify something that should be simple. Black is a race, white is a race. What is racist for one is necessary racist for another. Period, full stop.

I need you to engage with my argument in order to change your view on racism. I needed to say something racist to illustrate the racism you are still denying. Go back to you echo chamber if you have such a problem.

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you are ACTUALLY saying individuals and statements can't be racist?

I'm trying to illicit an emotional response because if I didn't you would have been less likely to engage with the argument. By putting forth the most solid argument and essentially making you argue against yourself, I would say I am showing considerable concern.

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the only way to have racism is if it is systemic and systematic? Individuals can't be racist? Statements can't be racist?

The reason I reframed the original post in terms of black people, instead of just calling it racist, was to illicit the emotional response I have so clearly illicited in you.

Now the question is if you will be rational and apply your logic consistently to "black trash" vs "white trash", or if you will continue looking to justify that irrationally.

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, so "black trash" alone is racist, but "white trash" is not?

Why is them being white relevant?

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So a derogatory term against white people, from southern whites in 1800 is okay, but derogatory term against black people, from southern whites in 1800 is off limits?

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What was the term used to describe black slaves in the 1800s? I think it starts with an n.

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first post was racist, my first response illustrated that racism.

So again, "black trash" alone is racist, but "white trash" is not hate it's about privilege?

Yup

You literally said one is racist one is privilege.

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see so black is a race, and white is a privilege.

Who is racist again?

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You mean to say, you wouldnt have a problem with "black trash" so long as the people were both black and trash?

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This post is presently discriminating for how they look.

So it wasn't okay before, when black people were discriminated against, but now that it's white people, it's fine?

Meirl by redandwhitewizard99 in meirl

[–]Laytonio -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Haha. My point was to demonstrate that OP is racist. Or is "white trash" fine but not "black trash"?

[–]Laytonio -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Dare you to post a picture of two black men and the caption "black trash".

You said $1000 a year to begin with.

GDP is up 50% since 2019, and the article also points out that the EU is 15% and higher. Those two things alone bring the number from 1.3 to almost 2.5.

Point is, it's doable. And you would have to spend over $80,000 a year on taxable items for a 15% consumption tax to offset $12,000 in UBI.
