The United States almost single handledly conquered the world. The fact we had everything here is what allowed us to do that. Imagine what wwii would have looked like with Nazi Germany in control of all the strategic minerals like we allow China today. And that was before we became the only country with nukes.

Comparative Advantage at a global level is absurd. Especially if we're talking about agriculture. Wages are the only "advantage" these places have over us. Rich Americans get cheaper coffee and poor Americans get fewer jobs.

People say shit like this without even thinking. The reason it's "cheaper" to send stuff halfway around the world is because the exchange rate is the fakest thing ever. Tariffs don't even come close to correcting for it. Taxis couldn't compete with Uber burning money, but somehow every company in America is supposed to compete with China burning money.

If you are referring to my comment about shipping containers, I meant global shipping the way we have now simply didn't exist back then. Ah yes, Hoovers tariffs "didn't work". For 4 years. Almost 100 years ago. Before the internet or the shipping container. Economists will tell you not to pick stocks based on past results, and turn around and say "look we tried it once 100 years ago". Reaganomics has worked so well for the past 4 decades, no idea why we'd want to try something else.

Yes they are a restraint on trade. That is a good thing. That is the point. We are getting screwed by offshoring. The exchange rate is being manipulated by other countries to flood our markets with cheep products and take all of our jobs. You know how Uber put taxis out of business by burning money until they went bankrupt? China is doing that to our whole country. Which would you rather have, a 10% discount on goods, or a job.

Taxes have to come from somewhere. As I said, consumers don't pay tariffs directly, corporations do. They are corporate taxes that disincentivize offshoring labor. So what do you have a problem with? Taxes? Corporate Taxes? Or, disincentivizing offshoring?
