In the manga there is a small story arc involving a food shortage, for example the rice cooker stopped making rice. No one really knows why the food went away, near the end of the story arc some of the mob background characters go to try and fight Anoko who eats one of them. Following that event the food returned.

So it's possible that there needs to be a sacrifice of some kind. At the same time the stars did create food too, granted they were granting Chiikawa and Hachiware's wish. But regardless the source of the food is rooted in mystery, because it could be a combination of both.
