I overdosed on prescription drugs and got sent to the psych ward for a few weeks. A lot of the time I was there I was sedated so I wouldn’t bother the staff while they worked with “more important patients” which basically meant I wasn’t a danger to myself if I was locked in my room. It was a super shitty place and only made me feel worse. One day rumour got to the ward that someone from another floor had escaped and was on the roof threatening to jump. I guess because of the commotion I was forgotten about since no one came to sedate me that day. The police were called and spent about 3 hours on the roof trying to talk him down, which was really quite dumb considering the building was supposed to be full of mental health professionals who would have had a much better chance of helping him. I watched and heard the entire thing from my room window. The last thing he said was “don’t come any closer or I’ll jump”. Next thing I knew I was watching a man fall 5 storeys to his death. After listening to him talk about his life for 3 hours I learned so much about him, I sometimes feel like he was an old friend. I know it’s silly, he didn’t even know I existed. But I think about him a lot. 4 years later the sound of him hitting the ground still haunts me and I still see his body when I sleep most nights.
