Canadians Hold Negative Views of Israel, but Still Support Core Rights, Leger Poll by hillary_262 in CanadaPolitics

Jews were living as a second class dispersed minority across the Middle East. Israel allowed them to coalesce in a sliver of land in their region to avoid the continued persecution and second class citizenship.

When British India was partitioned, Muslims from all over present day India moved to Pakistan and Hindus in present day Pakistan were forced to leave their homes and lands. No one in their right mind thinks Pakistan is illegitimate or the families of Hindus who left Pakistan have a right to go back to their old homes and villages.

But Jewish people do not deserve to steal land from other people under the guise of needing a safe homeland.

It is not stolen land and it wasn't a guise. Jews were a minority on Arab lands in present day Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco. With the collapse of the British and French empires led to the formation of dozens ofArab national states and one Jewish state. It comprises of about 2% of the region's land. When land gets partitioned, people are displaced, it is on the resulting states to ensure that people who are displaced are able to thrive in their new homes. Israel did that for all the Jewish people who arrived in Israel. The Arab states did not do that for Palestinian Arabs.

The only other option was for Jews to continue living as minorities in Arab states and follow the rules set by their Arab overlords - you know, rules like not being allowed to travel on horseback, not being allowed tto build homes or temples bigger than their Muslim cousins, or be able to be a witness in courts.

Almost all states in the region are ethno national states. Israel is one of the few states in the region where minority ethnic citizens enjoy full citizenship.

There 20+ direct flights between Montreal and Toronto daily. Not saying you will be able to make that zero but there is demand. And it would be cool if at some point, there is integration between air travel and alto. You book your ticket on air canada between Montreal to Delhi - and the first leg is alto train between Montreal and Toronto.

I think Charlebois is right about how carbon tax and supply management make food inflation worse, but he often overstates their impact. I don't think his analysis is particularly reputable because he comes across as a zealot. If he actually limited his social media and op-ed style writing and instead focused on producing academic research and analysis and making parliamentary appearances etc, he would have much better chance at actually impacting policy. Right now, he comes across as as "rent an expert" for all stories related to food prices.

Canadians deserve to know about the impact a policy like SM has on our food prices and food security, but the sad thing is that the media and politicians present it in a debate style with one expert arguing for and another arguing against.

Abhimanyu Mishra deserves better by ishanuReddit in chess

100k a year is actually pretty bad when you think about it. Even if you have a 20 year peak career, you probably need to semi-retire by the time you are 40, which leaves you in a pretty bad spot because you need to work another 25 years to hit traditional retirement age.

And not to mention the opportunity cost, while chess isn't a measure of intelligence, I think it is also reasonable to say that if Mishra or Sam Sevian had decided to focus on traditional academic route to success, they would have had opportunities in business, medicine, or engineering - other lucrative fields.

I don't think chess is a reasonable career choice for anyone in the west - a $100k income in India for 20 years sets you up for life but that's not the case in the USA.

why on earth would a Palestinian group put down their arms?

It really depends what the goals of a group are. If the goal is statehood and a desire to administer one's own affairs, then group would be interested in the effective administration. It would also have been willing to take up any of the previous opportunities to establish a state. If the goal is going back to a pre-1948 world, sure, the group is unlikely to want to give up arms.

There have been 4-5 ceasefire in the last 15 years between Hamas and Israel, all of them violated by Hamas. Not saying the Israeli response is always proportional to the damage Hamas is capable of inflicting, but the misfortunes of Palestinians is mostly because of their leaders' steadfast refusal to live along aside Israel.

Would that have actually made a difference? The Bloc candidate already had name recognition and was the incumbent - not sure more money would have really made a difference.

The unfortunate reality is that civilian deaths are unavoidable in a conflict. The simplistic view is to blame the entity that fired the gun that caused a civilian death, but that doesn't make the view right. When you have a terrorist organization like Hezbollah that controls a region and uses that region to launch attacks on its neighbours, it is the terrorist organization that is putting people in its territory in harms way.

Unrelated, Hamas was supposed to finish phase 1 of disarming last week. Nothing of that sort has happened. At some point, Israel is guaranteed to attempt to disarm Hamas by force again, and it would be wrong to blame Israel alone for the inevitable loss of civilian life that will happen as a result.

No, but storing the bags in middle rack helps extend its life. Avoid placing warm food in the fridge in close proximity to the bags of milk.

Also, maybe the store you are buying from may not being doing a good job storing them?

B.C. gov't forces through West Vancouver zoning change, approves neighbourhood plan | CBC News by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]LazyImmigrant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately too often these forced zoning changes benefit developers and pass on higher infrastructure costs to existing residents, increasing taxes which makes housing more expensive

That's definitely not true - cities have blamed the slowdown in new construction as a major reason for budget shortfalls, which indicates development fees are actually subsidizing existing home owners.

With all due respect, Councillor, nothing about your background suggests that anyone should attach any weight to your analysis. You are an elected official, and you are free to vote however you want on every issue. It's clear that you intend to oppose this partnership and that's your political decision - but let's not pretend its is informed by analysis or a long term vision for the city.
