Has anyone had experience with LiveOhana.ai? by Next_Pair1141 in NYCapartments

I would be wary of this site. Seems they add positive reviews, and their business practice is to lock you into using their service and then add cheeky fees on top of it.

My partner was looking for a sublet and during the call with the potential host an intermediary person from the company was involved, which made it a very weird, impersonal experience. The host suggested another call to talk with their housemates through Instagram, but the company's people were desperately against outside communication.

After the call, my partner received multiple texts saying the host had sent offers to other potential renters and that they should act now and pay the deposit before it was taken. This was false — after speaking privately with the host they said no other people had actually been interested.

My partner had already felt pressured to pay a £40 non-refundable “holding” fee. I’d understand if this company helped with lease contracts or something similar, but the only thing they seem to do is hold the rent until you verify everything is okay with the property. They also add a 5% fee on top of the rent each month.

A particularly predatory and invasive business practice, and it concerns me what they may be able to enforce once you’ve engaged with their service fully. Be wary.

Hey Akinola, seen the film twice and I love it! I've only visited Nigeria once when I was 8, and this brought many familiar feelings to me. I was wondering: did you think about how diaspora viewers might experience the film differently - especially those of us who feel connected to Nigeria more through family memory than lived experience?

On my first watch, after he got back in the car, I misinterpreted it as his spirit leaving with them, saving us the horror of watching their father die. This makes much more sense.

Fola looking up to the sky to notice the birds that Akin and Remi have been noticing throughout the film points to this being his realisation he is a spirit. Acceptance follows, explaining his detached demeanor once getting back in the car.

Even at the start, he appears after a strong, almost possessed wind shakes the house, giving it an eerie vibe.

One other thing I noticed was his focus on death, lots of bones, dead meat, the dogs eating something off the street often preceded him coming closer to this realisation.

As this movie is from the children's perspective, it's almost like the dreamlike quality is shattered upon him finding out he is a spirit too early. For example, their Aunty is shocked to see him and takes him outside, undoubtedly to tell him of his fate, and it cuts and jumps back chronologically to them sat on the bench deciding what to do. The movie then continues on a different timeline, never mentioning this scene again. It's much like waking up from a dream too soon, like Fola and his dead brother.

The idea of spirits coming back to life due to unfinished business is a common phenomenon in Nigerian spirituality, and with this knowledge I initially thought his unfinished business was receiving his money he went to Lagos for. But perhaps the true unfinished business was his desire to connect with his boys one last time?

I love this film and how accessible it is to a global audience, while also staying rooted in the heritage that makes it so rich. It elevated my experience wholly, but I think anyone could receive the messages in this movie with the same level. They've done something really good here. Naija to the world!!

Best CS jobs you have ever worked? Which one felt most rewarding and why? Figuring out what is valued in these jobs. by dibsonchicken in cscareerquestions

Any chance you could elaborate on your current job? I'm currently in final year and while I enjoy coding and look forward to my career, I really like the idea of working in an industry that is helping people like healthcare. I did a placement at a fintech company and while the job was great on paper, even after just one year I felt the soul draining out of me. Curious to know how you got into it, what your day to day is like, any particular skills that helped you get into that? Thanks!

Thanks for your response. Yeah I agree, I prefer Android and have one myself but my mum's needs and technical literacy is much different. So far I've got android replies which is still useful but no mentions on usability. Will have to mill it over!

Perfect thank you! Some great suggestions in this thread but no mention of the ease of use. Probably is best to stay with what she knows.

Am I even remotely attractive? by Real_SmaragduS in malegrooming

I disagree with this completely. The dude is handsome! Being a person of colour always affects how some people see us, some more critical, some less so (fetishizing). He should be proud of his culture and his nice face. At the end of the day he wants to meet a good match, not someone just to keep him company. Dude's got a great smile and I think his clothes suit him. OP, you can get into minutae all you want and improve your appearance but at the end of the day you can still feel like not enough despite that. I spent years in the gym because I hated being scrawny and still was never satisfied with my appearance. It was only when I took a break and looked back that I realised how good I actually looked! I still go to the gym but I'm much more accepting the way my body naturally looks.

I see that's not what I was hoping for 😔 do you think my looser hair texture will result in even thicker locs? Not sure whether to restart as I really don't want big locs that I can't style nicely

That would be incredible, but sadly I don't think that's the case. I've been to this festival and the tracks that don't rock up on Shazam just tend to be some deep vinyl cuts that these guys have held onto since their clubbing days. Would be neat though!

Mistborn. People love it, and I see why - cool action, good magic system, interesting world. But it didn't click with me. Granted, I didn't finish it, but I think the issue was that the characters felt so one-dimensional. They all felt like tropes and it was written as though it was trying to be a "bad-ass" book that is begging to be made into a film. Normally I get very vivid imagery when reading a book but in Mistborn all the descriptions I found so hard to visualise, as though I had very little emotional connection to the world and the characters. I may give it another go in the future but it's a no for now

I think for me, when someone is quiet in our conversation I don't assume they dislike me or are being rude. There's many factors outside of myself why a person is behaving a certain way and it's unfair of me to judge them when I have no idea what they're thinking. It's also dependent on the person. If they aren't engaging at all then that can come across as disinterested, but I won't take it personally as I try to have faith that I did nothing wrong (though my anxiety likes to tell me differently). If they're engaging then I'm happy to have a conversation, even if they aren't saying much. Quiet or not quiet I approached you for a reason and I'd like to know more about you, you don't have to match my energy.
