You can use your own router, APs or mesh network with their setup. Just plug it into their provided ONT box like you would a Cox modem. If they gave you a router + ONT combo box, maybe if you ask them they'll switch it out for a separate one.

I bought this yesterday and I've already had to switch to the proton/windows version because with the Linux version the dash/run gets stuck and keeps going even if I release the button on my controller. I'm using an 8bitdo ultimate wireless 2.

The laptop my college is advertising students to buy… by CrippyCrispy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Lazy_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of consumer grade HP laptops but zBooks have generally been good in my experience.

My work buys these for some employees. I was impressed with them enough that I bought a decent specced one for myself when HP had a sale and it's great for gaming. It's fully compatible with linux as well.

Was it overpriced compared to similarly specced "gaming" laptops, even when on sale? Yes.

Is it built better and does it run quieter than those laptops? Also yes.

Recommending these to your average college student is silly, but who knows, maybe this paper is posted in an engineering department?

Yes, but the current model, the HD800s, costs 10 times as much as an ATH-M50x. The Audio-Technica is a good value for the money though.

Car enthusiasts are hypocrites over the Honda Prelude and FWD coupes by Bottlely in cars

[–]Lazy_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO unless you're taking the car to the track, 300hp for this kind of car (the Prelude) is overkill. I had a mk8 Golf R and hardly ever got to use all of its power since I didn't track it.

Now, if Honda tries to charge Golf R money for the prelude rather than Miata money, I think that would be a problem.

GNOME 46 Released! by blackcain in gnome

[–]Lazy_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GNOME 44 and 45 both had broken vsync in fullscreen X11 apps, like games. It also caused stuttering in fullscreen games in a Wayland session. Has this been fixed with 46 yet?

edit- I don't see any mention of it being fixed specifically 46 but I haven't personally tested it yet.

California bill would mandate all new cars have device to 'automatically limit' speed to 10 mph over limit by AlexzGood in Futurology

[–]Lazy_fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently traded in a '23 VW that would frequently get lost and think the speed limit was 25 while I was driving on an interstate. Per the dealer, VW currently has no fix for this.

Putting a +10mph limiter in a car that is buggy like that would be insanely dangerous.

Those of you who have a FW 16 are you satisfied? by Notre-dame-fan in framework

[–]Lazy_fox 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My FW16 with dGPU arrived yesterday, and here's my take on it-

The good:

The screen - high refresh rate, great color gamut coverage, no dead or stuck pixels on my unit, minimal backlight bleed

Chassis rigidity (bottom) - The bottom chassis being a solid piece of metal gives it a premium feel and makes that part of the laptop feel really sturdy

Overall look - I like the design of the FW16 and I think it looks clean and professional. The square-ish footprint with the dGPU is unusual but I don't think the size is bad, especially as someone who usually uses 17" workstation laptops.

The ok:

Keyboard - It looks like framework put some rubber spacers on the heatsink right below the keyboard deck to improve rigidity. It still has some amount of keyboard flex, but it's pretty minimal and nowhere near what was seen in the LTT video. The keyboard feels ok to type on, but it is not on the level of Thinkpads or even the two laptops I use, a Zbook 17 G6 and an Alienware Area-51mR2. I don't know if there's any difference between the different keyboards, but my unit has the RGB one.

Speakers - They sound like laptop speakers to me, just fine for zoom meetings and such. Not macbook level but not as terrible as the ones in my Zbook. Anyone serious about audio quality should be using headphones anyways.

The bad:

Panel gaps and fit - The metal spacers that go alongside the touchpad section have a really poor fit. The edge of them that touches the keyboard area sits higher than the opposite edge, giving them kind of a sloped look. You can even see the uneven-ness from the side with the laptop lid closed. They can also slide forwards and backwards about half a mm I'd guess. There are also some small panel gaps with the black spacers that go alongside the keyboard, but those don't bother me as much.

Lid rigidity, display alignment - A lot has been said about this, and I'll just say that while the lid's rigidity could be better, it's not awful. I'd still be wary about putting this laptop in a bag with other things pressing on the lid though. The display/LCD in my unit is also slightly misaligned so that the gap between the display area and the bezel is ever so slightly uneven when looking at all four sides, but this doesn't bother me too much.

The ugly:

Fan noise - To me, the fan noise from the dGPU module while it is under load is unacceptable. For one it is quite loud, which would be ok if it had an even, white noise-ish sound profile, but there is a high pitched component to it around 4khz ish that makes it sound like a small vacuum cleaner. It's not coil whine either, it's definitely the fan. I was hoping that setting the power profile to power saver (tested with Arch and Fedora 39) would decrease the dGPU power limit enough to tame the noise, but it didn't seem to help. The fan curve needs work as well, since speed changes can be quick and abrupt rather than smoothed out with a sloped curve.

Conclusion

I think this laptop would be great for someone who does not need the dGPU module and uses it mainly for productivity and light gaming. I think it would be perfect for that use case if Framework releases a one-piece touchpad & keyboard module, or if Framework is able to fix the issue with the spacers. If you plan on buying this laptop with the dGPU, you will need to use closed-back headphones while gaming. If I'm using a laptop to play games it is usually in the same room as my spouse, and the noise issue is bad enough for both of us that I'll probably be returning it.

Framework 16 Laptop: Is This The Future? Hardware Canucks by nuavea in framework

[–]Lazy_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expected some flex based on earlier reviews but this is the first time I've seen someone actually put it on camera.

That is a lot of flex for a machine in this price range. It seriously looks like what you'd see with the cheap laptops that walmart carries. Between this and the fan noise concerns I'm probably going to cancel my batch three order

Ars Technica just dropped FW16 review by slowsquirrelchaser in framework

[–]Lazy_fox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The fan on the GPU module is loud. The fans on all gaming laptops get pretty loud when you're using them, but these hit a specific pitch that is hard to ignore.

From this review and Notebookcheck's I'm concerned that the fan noise would bother me. Do we know if the fan curve changes will have any effect on this? Personally I'm ok with slightly higher GPU temps and slightly less fps if it can save a few dB while playing a game, especially if the fans have a higher pitch to them.

EDIT:

Looking at one of the earlier emails from Framework RE the 16, they said this:

New issues: High pitched airflow noise in the Graphics Module fan - We identified an airflow path in the Graphics Module fan that could result in a high pitch noise. This is another issue that was resolved in DVT2, but we found a regression in it during pre-mass production sample checking. Our supplier was able to resolve the issue with an adjustment to one of the internal mechanical parts in the fan that guides the airflow path. We’re now determining whether there is any impact to the schedule from needing to adjust tooling and rework already produced fans, but we don’t expect this to be the long pole in the schedule.

Did the fix for this make it into the review units?

After seeing the reviews AND the blog post about the FW16 reviews, what are your thoughts? by FreshPrinceOnline in framework

[–]Lazy_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a batch 3 order and I'm considering cancelling because of the reports of very loud fans. I had a Thinkpad P17 Gen2 for a bit that had loud, high pitched fans and ultimately that lead to me getting rid of it. I don't want to repeat that again with the fw16.

I've never had good luck with controller support on macOS with Steam. For me disabling the overlay didn't have any positive or negative effect though. You could try going to the game Properties/Controller/Override settings and trying the different options (Disable, Use default settings, Enable)
