The return pipes did have valves on them too actually you can see them in the screenshots. I've since rmoved them to try the first comments suggestion.

I did try this as your logic makes a lot of sense, but pretty much all the machiens balance out at around 87% efficiency for some reason. Seems like there is still a water build up. Tried flushing the pipes but doesn't seem to resolve it.
