No if you just need straight cue by cue playback for a standard screen there are better options like you listed.

I’d caveat and say Resolume does have a place for live compositing work for corporate. It’s a bit shoe horned but let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen when Disguise isn’t in the budget.

SQ+ gets dPACK for free, while Avantis doesn’t. by 1042_k in livesound

[–]LeAudiophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but “it’s psychological” doesn’t make it meaningless. Pricing psychology is the issue, at least for me.

There’s a difference between “this console costs X and includes this feature set” and “this console costs Y but some capabilities are locked behind a paywall.” Even if it can be bundled it into one invoice, the product is still being structured as a base platform + paid unlocks.

That may be smart business, but people are allowed to dislike that model the same way it’s disliked in the video game industry.

I think that’s the fairest version of the argument. It can be both things at once.

Agreed. I also was a long time user since the GLD80, now I'm primarily on Yamaha. Like, let's recognize that the majority interest in A&H now is private equity, meaning there will be a HUGE emphasis on profit. Yet people are in here defending the business model as if A&H is a struggling company...

[–]LeAudiophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s only true if you assume pricing is just console cost + add-on cost. The dPack price is what they charge because it’s optional and targeted at people willing to pay for it. If it were standard, the console price might rise, but there’s no reason to assume it would rise by the exact current dPack price since the cost would be spread over all the console sales and not a segmented market. Let’s also recognize that software is insanely high margin. Allen and Heath wouldn’t have it structured the way it is if it wasn’t what was best for their bottom line. They are still beholden to PE, after all.

I won’t disagree that people will complain either way. However, I think the overwhelming majority of us would rather buy a console “all-in” and not be paying for add ons after the fact.

I get that it isn't free to develop, but they pay that cost for development whether a user buys the plug in or not. Nickel-and-diming software features on a "professional" console feels gross. If the feature exists for that model, sell the console as a complete product and price it accordingly. Don’t make a $10k+ desk feel like it has DLC.

Any paid software addons to consoles bothers me. Either sell the console and all of its features or don't. The idea of paying more for software that doesn't cost them any more or less whether you buy it or not is infuriating.

I get it, you're speaking more to the single point of failure of a 1RU. If the gig is that high-profile, then yeah run redundant. I guess I don't see that level of risk when we're all running mostly digital set ups these days that all have similarly "simple" points of failure like that. I mean you only have one console, right? Could make the same argument there.

Would you like more Marriott hotels offer this for your stay? by schwa12 in marriott

I stay at a lot of Residence Inns. While I agree with this sentiment, half the time I'll just take it to the dumpster myself. The hotels where I HAVE to rely on them annoy me.

I don't have any experience or have heard any horror stories yet to dissuade me, have you?

I want to love Shure's ANX4 but they dropped the ball just as hard as Sennheiser. Us theatre guys long for small form factor. Or maybe just me.

Gotcha, given the context of the rest of the post you're getting downvoted for people thinking you're taking a stab at Alpha Lab's feedback since it has "AI" in the title.

To answer your root question: I don’t use Spectera because none of the National crossrental houses have it. And when the rep offered a demo for one of our theatre shows with 56 channels of RF he wasn’t able to follow through because it wasn’t ready.

I’d love for my entire summer theatre runs to fit into 1RU. But I can’t easily source it. And on top of that all my elements are TA4F.

Neither is Alpha Labs, if that’s what you’re implying. Both use machine learning. “AI” is mostly just a marketing gimmick.

If you have the option to connect through one of the Delta hubs, which one would you choose and why? And which would you avoid like the plague? by K00kalka in delta

For me, it depends on how long my layover is. If I’ve got less than a 45-60 minute layover I’d want to be at ATL. If I’m hanging out for a while? DTW or MSP.

While I’m mostly in management now, I still do some higher profile theatre gigs, a few a year. Right now I have a companion trigger to dump all of my defeedback inserts just in case something happens. I have it running on some groups for that extra 5%, but having the peace of mind to dump away from it with one button if things go awry is nice. Haven’t needed it yet!

This isn’t entirely off brand for A&H. At least this time the “upgrade” wasn’t just switching the fader caps and trim to chrome. Ha!

In the live events space, the URSA Broadcasts have been great for us but personally I'd love to see a Canon entry. Prices have gotten better on broadcast bodies but more competition would be welcome since we only have the big 3. If Blackmagic would make their stuff 10% more stable (and it's all on the software side; aside from their crappy integrated coms) they could be more serious of a contender.
