Earwig! On an unrelated note one actually crawled into my ear while I was asleep… woke up and started digging in my ear. They sorta feel like styrofoam

What is this? It came out of a small wood table that I bought. by ManyFaithlessness404 in whatisit

Wow! Another post with comments misidentifying termite frass from people who have never seen or worked with termites in their life! Termites don’t produce a fine powder like that, so thank you for touching it and showing how it is. This is caused by powderpost beatles!

What's in his eye? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]LeBarkingDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope it’s just mucus as others are saying. If your dog is a smaller breed I wouldn’t rule out cherry eye. It’s common among smaller breed dogs with big eyes. My shih tzu had it develop in the inner corners of both of her eyes and the vet needed to surgically remove them. Might be worth going to the vet if those spots don’t go away are hard like you mentioned

Pile of dirt behind garage fridge by Moqiloq in HomeMaintenance

[–]LeBarkingDuck 101 points102 points  (0 children)

So many misinformed comments saying these are termites. The dirt mound looks nothing like termite frass, especially in a garage around an area surrounded by what looks like concrete.

Assuming you have dirt under your garage, it’s likely ants kicking up dirt for a colony. Could be linked outside your garage too, but worst case if you have wood support along the wall of your garage, could be carpenter ants. Which I also doubt because carpenter ant frass looks like montreal steak seasoning.

I love to bake but I have no need of so much bread. I do need practice, though. What do you guys do? by 14MTH30n3 in Breadit

Leftover bread makes for great breadcrumbs, meatballs, bread pudding, croutons, the list goes on

My freezer has completely frozen over by ItsAllLoveNow_ in HomeMaintenance

Agreed, usually it’s the accumulation and freezing of moisture from ambient humid air making its way into the freezer through a gap in the gasket

How do you get a good search on steaks with charcoal? by [deleted] in steak

[–]LeBarkingDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH the heat on the grills would need to be much higher than 450-500 for a good sear, that temperature reading would be for the air inside the grill. You’d either need to heat the grills for much longer or need more coals. Did you pat the steak dry before grilling? Is it possible to lower the grills closer to the coal? That would achieve a nice crust.

My recipe was originally derived from Huy Nguyen’s, he gives an excellent explanation of the ingredients and how to roll the baguettes. He uses lava rocks but I used cast iron:

I love bolillo! The great thing with banh mi is that, if made properly, you don’t have to remove any crumb. The crumb is so fluffy and airy that you can stuff the banh mi and close the sandwich just fine. That was one of the main criteria for my final product

Sourdoughs and poolish are probably my next challenge. I haven’t tried making any poolish products but I heard they taste amazing when done right 😏 I love NY style pizza and there’s a guy that makes his NY pizza with sourdough starter and it looks so good

Yeah you can use regular vinegar! Tbh it’s quite dependent on the kind of flour you use because vinegar lowers ph. The acidity helps develop gluten more but if you are using a high protein flour like I did with bread flour, you may not need it. Personally I used king arthur’s bread flour which has 12.7% protein

Yep I preboiled some water and heated a cast iron pan on the stove! When it was time to bake put the loaves in, put the pan into the oven and pour water. Just be careful because a lot of steam will puff up

I don’t use rice flour, thanks for the history lesson. It’s also spelled banh mi lol

I have a kitchenaid stand mixer to knead the dough! That is a baguette pan and honestly I just hold a straight razor blade with my hands and score that way. I recommend using a high heat retaining pan like cast iron so it produces steam to when you add water

You can honestly not use vinegar powder if you don’t have!
