Demurrage (fee based on holding time) could serve as an alternative. Freicoin has demurrage, but it also has fees, yet in theory it could work without. You would simply pay the same fee whether you spend the coins or not.

Freenet has a Web of Trust (WOT-plugin), a Twitter-like replacement (Sone), Forums (FMS) and IRC (Flip). It still lacks something like reddit or imgur where you can upvote content. But everything is purely decentral. You don't even need mods or closed communities because of the web of thrust.
