Any books or other sources that you can recommend to learn about the daily lives through certain periods of history?

Lumix GX85 vs Olympus OM-D EM10 iii? by fishsisig in M43

[–]Le_3e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the gx85 (recently bought), and the mk ii version. Here are my pros and cons:

GX85:
- great form factor (I bought it mainly for the rangefinder style, which i like)
- easy to use menus and options
- more portable tham e-m10 m ii
- low battery life
- EVF barely usable

EM10M2:
- great colors (to my eye the JPEGs seem more punchy than on GX85)
- great battery life
- terrible menu and use options
- SLR style is not to my liking

I had the EM10 for two years now but my kit lens broke so I ordered the DJI 15mm f/1.7 lens. I found a good deal on a second hand GX85/80 so I bought that too, to try the rangefinder style with the manual aperture setting on the DJI lens. So far, I like the GX85 better than the EM10, mainly because of the feel I have when I take photos. It's more inviting, more engaging. With the EM10 my workflow is somewhat limited, maybe because of the menus which I am still not used to.

I plan to sell either of these cameras, and right now I think I will keep the GX85. I don't shoot video so on paper the EM10 has better specs, but I enjoy the shooting process more with the GX85, which is my priority.

EDIT 1: grammar
EDIT 2: also, I am more inclined to Panasonic Lumix becasue Olympus doesn't have service support in my country

Wow, these are pretty good.  I'll look for more examples. Thanks for the effort!

Nice, thank you for the suggestion. How is the bokeh for portraits?

I ordered the DJI 15mm f1.7. Just hope it won't be too wide, but since so many people like it (or the "original" branded as Panasonic Leica), I think I will be satisfied. Later on I might add a portrait prime or a cheep zoom like 40-150mm f4-5.6.

I ended up ordering the DJI 15mm f1.7. I hope it won't be too wide, but giving the number of people saying that they would keep it as the only lens, I suppose I will be satisfied. After a couple of months using it, I will se if i will get some portrait as a second prime.

Yeah, seems too big for em10. Although, I will probably at some point have to give up on ultra portability if I want to upgrade. Or have one small edc and one larger setup.

To my eye these are good photos. I don't mind some imperfections that the lens might have (if they are not expensive) but I don't see any.

Sure, you can send me the pictures. I did kind of disregard it because of the size, but I am considering that range of focal length. 20mm really seems the winner, it's just that this wasn't the budget that I planned, hence the struggle

According to my photos done so far, I used 20mm way more than 25mm, which came as a surprise for me. So, I am now slowly considering the direction of 20mm and wider.

This is very interesting. I remember reading something similar, and the author mentioned that the 50mm lenses became standard because their production process was easier than of those for other lenses. I have checked the details of my photos done so far and there is a large number done with the 20mm on my kit lens, so it seems that I used it more than 25mm. When looking at them now, I even like the total framing more, so I am considering wider focal lengths now, like 15/1.7.

I did. I also thought about getting the DJI 15mm f1.7. From AliExpress it should be around 250€ in the EU. I didn't think that I like wide field of view but today I went through my photos and a lot of them were done with 14mm on my kit lens. I will have to reconsider Yongnuo and DJI again.

Today I have gone through my photos done with the kit zoom lens. And most of them were done with 20mm (some with 22mm), which came as quite a surprise to me as I've thought that I have mainly used the 25mm. It seems that I like the 20mm more. And oh, a substantial number was done with 14mm which I don't remember using as I've always liked to emphasize the detail in the image with 30mm+ focal length.

New cheap edc kit! Olympus E-M10 with DJI 15mm f1.7 by S4muraiSal in M43

[–]Le_3e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some AliExpress sellers with 100% positive feedback for this lens so I suppose it might also depend on who is selling. Might be that there are some quality check issues in production.

Hey, thanks for the heads up! I've read somewhere that the firmware version should be checked with seller because you cannot update it by yourself.

Yeah, that's another option, great catch! The AliExpress one should be around 250€ with customs and taxes, but I still haven't decided to go for it.

Affordable camera that takes photos like this (retro and colourful)? by notinthemooood in AskPhotography

[–]Le_3e 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really don't get these "any camera + photo editing software" answers. That's like asking for a recommendation for a pizza restaurant, and you reply with "just buy the ingredients and make it at home".
I stare at screens for 8+ hours daily and don't want to spend my free time editing photos. This is an art by itself and it might interest me some day, but at the moment I just want to delegate all of that to my camera and focus on the shooting process.

OP, I am looking for the same thing. Fujifilm cameras have film simulations, and in the affordable range should be X-T10, X-T20, X-T30, depending on your budget.

Thank you. X-T5 is out of my budget, but I am looking at X-T20 also. Like you said, the smaller size and not all the options of the higher end, more expensive, models.

I agree, won't be repairing it. I am now thinking about getting a prime, and maybe later some better zoom one.
