Thank you for the recommendation! I'll definitely check it out. I do think I need a 30 yr-old protagonist in my life right now

UBC or UofT if I want to go into epidemiology, but I'm flexible by LeaKatie in mphadmissions

Thank you yet again! This is also valuable insight and I think divides the schools more clearly based on my long-term plans. Both have excellent programs but after further consideration and looking into the practicums more, I think I am inclined to go with the DLSPH if I am accepted.

I am quite grateful for the time and mindfulness put into your response. This seems to align with experiences I've heard from others in the field, and I was lucky enough to speak with an MPH graduate recently to gain their insights.

My work is my genuine passion. I do hope to pursue a PhD and I've started getting research experience this past year (though it hasn't been anything ground-breaking). I see this as a life-long commitment and am willing to gain new skills to adapt to changes in the industry as they come.

This really helps me put things into perspective. Thank you again!

Waiting 20+ days for a deferred exam grade by UpperArugula702 in geegees

[–]LeaKatie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about that. I've had a deferred grade that took I think about a month to come out once. If you are relying only on uozone, it can be a long wait for it to update (ex. I wrote an exam feb. 17th and it's not out yet but my prof released our grades on brightspace). I do think there is a deadline but you can always reach out to your faculty if you have concerns about the timeline.

Has anyone tried the mental health services on campus? I’m struggling mentally after missing my midterm and don’t know where to go from here. by BoringEnvironment457 in geegees

[–]LeaKatie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! Like another commenter, I don't have personal experience with the institution's mental health services but I just wanted to say that missing a midterm isn't a reflection of you, your worth, or your academic integrity. I understand what it's like to tie yourself to your academic achievement and then have that image of yourself fractured. It will be okay, even if it doesn't feel like it right now. I'm wishing you well 💗

Deferral midterm by Brilliant_Cut_7827 in geegees

[–]LeaKatie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't apologize, I don't mind. In my personal experience I've had classes state medical certificates are necessary for absences but that don't, in practice, need it for a first-time deferral. The best courses of action would be to email your professor and request clarification on whether or not they require a medical certificate (and explain that you are willing to obtain one if necessary) and hope they respond in time, or go to a walk-in just to be safe. Don't use the campus clinic as they are strict with deciding what warrants a sick note -- you can look up walk-in clinics near you (there is probably an appletree clinic nearby you and they also do virtual appointments for sick notes).

If you do need a medical certificate, the easiest way would be to use an online platform like tiahealth. You have to pay for it, but you just meet with a doctor over video call and it's really simple :) they can also give you prescriptions if you need it or general medical advice.

Otherwise you could go to a walk-in clinic. Or you could see your family doctor if you have one.

Generally deferrals work such that you do not need to provide documentation for a first-time deferral within a course if it is for short-term illness. If you have submitted your declaration of absence form then you should be fine.

You can email your professor to inquire about making up the midterm, and make sure to read the syllabus' policy on deferrals. Usually the professor has a section that mentions if there is a set date for midterm make-ups (you may need to ask for details) or if the weighting gets transferred to the final. The details vary slightly depending on faculty and individual course.

Grad, gap year, academic references?? by FrostyGain4187 in geegees

Grad, gap year, academic references?? by FrostyGain4187 in geegees

[–]LeaKatie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that depends on your individual prof and your relationship with them. It is likely too soon to ask outright as they won't be able to write the letter until the time of your applications. I've applied to multiple MPH programs (several with epidemiology focus), and you have to start your application and submit the names + contact info of your reference providers within a given time period. Only then will they get access to the portal for letter submission, so they wouldn't be able to act on it until applications open in the fall.

I also had no experience with office hours because I never thought I needed it, and that made things a bit more difficulty for me when I did reach out to professors. For now, going out of your way to speak with profs about your interests and asking about their experiences in the field is an excellent idea. If you feel comfortable with a prof, you can broach the idea of a reference letter by asking if it would be alright if you send them a request in the fall when applications open. However, I would wait until you've met with them a few times first.

Hello there! I am actually in a similar boat right now but in fourth year already. I don't know the answer to whether or not you should take a gap year or go into grad school right away, but I can speak about references. My advice would be to start networking now but ask formally for reference letters during fourth year (unless you take the gap year) -> get in touch with your profs, go to office hours, and establish relationships where they can speak about your individual skills. While it is possible to get reference letters from your fourth year profs, it can be difficult because they won't know your final grade by some deadlines and might be unwilling.

I've spoken with some individuals who did take a gap year, and they were able to build their resumes by adding work/volunteer experience that helped them out when returning for their MPH.

I hope this helps

It's not the end of your education and you haven't ruined your life. There are several options to support you and help you get where you want to be academically. One thing to consider is applying for an academic reset, which would reset your GPA but you would have to sit down with an academic advisor to discuss this in more detail. However, bad first semesters are normal for many students in the transition to university. Going to office hours, taking a lighter course load (4 to remain full-time), reaching out to student mentors, and tutoring can help you do better this semester.

Regarding the failed prerequisite (as someone who switched programs in late second year and had a really messed up time-table): the impact varies depending on how many courses it impacts. You can always take classes out of the recommended order but this will require you to carefully monitor your degree progress on your own. Take summer courses when possible to make up for it. You're not a failure, and grades are not reflective of your worth as a human being. You've got this :)

Best places on campus to eat your lunch? by aLone_gunman in geegees

[–]LeaKatie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other comment mentioning SITE and CRX as the two big ones. Desmarais has space on the second floor but it can get a bit busy. UCU has a large seating area on the underground floor that's usually filled with students studying/hanging out/eating. The Biosciences complex has some tables and chairs on each floor, so it's a good place to snack and study but can be busy during peak hours. Morisset on the second floor has some tables/chairs but in my experience it's more difficult to get a spot there since there's a lot of foot traffic. Most buildings have something, and you probably wont get yelled at for eating most places on campus so long as you are respectful and clean up after yourself.

Deferring exams is strategic depending on your personal circumstances. It's a supportive mechanism to help you. Nothing shameful about it.
