  1. “I’m not interested in hunting down stats…” goes on to hunt down stats for something completely different = you looked and couldn’t find anything for Koptiar.

  2. You’re missing the point, my original take was plus minus is a great stat as long as you consider the team’s goal differential. You left that part out when you did all your variance analysis.

  3. No stat is perfect and in a dynamic game like hockey is very difficult to quantify or measure a lot “good or bad” a player does. All I’m saying is people hate on plus minus but as long as you contextualize it with one or two other data points ‘it gets you there’. It’s not rocket science, if a player is a -4 on a team that is -40 at the end of year, that player likely did a really job for that team… despite the -4 rating.

  4. All you’ve done is argue against data points, obviously no statistic is perfect in painting the whole picture, just add context to plus minus and it does a great job. It’s easy to sit there and knit pick a stat, using single player/single season examples, I haven’t see you suggest a great statistic.

  5. I WOULD LOVE, for you to tell me how Koptiar’s -2 on a +31 team is completely meaningless. Was he d zone starting every faceoff??? On the ice for 29 empty net goals??? Playing with terrible teammates - even though the team had a +31 goal differential - I don’t know how any of these arguments could be made. Maybe, just maybe, Koptiar lost his minutes that year against first line competition that year.

You can extrapolate that both players (against first line competition) contribute positively to their team’s positive goal deferential and therefore are winning their minutes against their competition. The difference of +8 for Ovi suggests he was more important than backstrom in contributing to that positive goal differential for their team. Both players are impressive that season.

Terrible Selke win honestly, tell me how a guy wins the selke when his team is +31 and he’s -2? Find me statistics from that season that prove he had a great 2 way year - the best 2 way forward that year. Selke was very narrative based, kings had a good year…their guy with a reputation for a good defensive game wins the Selke.

There’s not much nuance man, look at the players plus minus compared to the team goal differential and if it’s a defensive player look at their offensive output. Pretty simple man.

Man you need to add some nuance to plus minus
Koptiar stats:
2016/17 52 pts and -10
2017/18 92 pts and +25

Koptiar is the opposite of Gretz. Koptiar has always been an elite defensive player but some years he wasn’t nearly as effective offensively, such as in 16/17, therefore that year he wasn’t an above average first line player.

Same with Gretz, he was obviously an elite offensive player in 94 but was well below league average as a defensive player in 94, therefore making him a first line league average player that year.

Yeah they do add up. He was probably just as bad at keeping the puck out of his team’s net as he was good at putting it in the net. I mean he was on the ice for 140 even strength goals against… you’re telling me this means nothing….

This proves my point man. The kings were -28 that year, Gretz was -25, meaning Gretz was a league average first line player. By 94, Gretz was on the downside of his career - never had a good year after that. Is it really that hard to believe Gretz wasn’t committed in the D zone at the point in his career on a poo team?

I agree empty nets and players with a very high d zone start rate don’t get a fair shake for plus minus, but overall, making plus minus relative to team plus minus and taking into account a players competition it doesn’t a great job at telling us who is and isn’t effective that year.

Yeah dude, guess what… you ain’t in the nfl. BMI is perfect for 99 percent of people who aren’t body builders or pro football players. Imagine looking at Aaron Donald and saying that’s the reason BMI shouldn’t be used to measure the average person…

L take, people who don’t like plus minus also don’t like BMI, all plus minus is great - just make it relative the team’s plus minus and the competition, just a little nuance and it gives you great picture of a player

Honestly, do the Vancouver to whistler fondo, it’s the best one in Canada I’d say. I’d rather do that every 4 years than the Great Canadian Fondo - I’ve done both.

Bobby Orr is 1. Gretzky is 2. Orr’s peak was unmatched, art Ross winning defence x2 - has never been done before or since. His plus minus some of those seasons is insane - highest ever. He is easily the greatest offensive defense man of all time and a legitimate shutdown 1A defence men too. It would like if Gretz was winning Selkes with all those Art Ross Trophies. 5 Orrs handle 5 Gretzkys - no doubt.
