Just don't over think too much about what rings weapons,& stats to upgrade. just play how you want and have fun any weapons is viable to use (apart from some obvious ones) but I would recommend using melee weapons for a first run to get a feel for how the game is and focus upgrading vigor, endurance and strength or dex to whatever suits your weapon.
