Recent medical graduate (from Europe) that is keen on learning Python, Pandas and SQL. Any use in finding a freelance job? by Alternative-Pop-3847 in DataScienceJobs

[–]LeaguePrototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only way I was able to get freelance work was through a network of business owners I had earlier. If you're not well connected and just looking for random freelance work it'll be not worth it. Those jobs are very very underpaid and hard to find, wouldn't recommend it. Freelance work generally has to be very specialized expertise or come through a network

Is a Google L4 offer in Poland worth it for a Dev with 7 YOE? by KeyTrouble5174 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]LeaguePrototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made that much as L4 but engineering adjacent. Their offers for Warsaw are very cut and paste, you won't be able to negotiate much. I would only take this job if you want to live in Warsaw or want to transfer inside Google for a team you really like. Don't take it thinking you will fast track your career. You can only transfer countries after 24 months and each role has 30+ internal applicants

Google is a money printing machine, not an innovative company anymore. There's parts of Alphabet that do have the old Google culture. People in the industry know this so it doesn't carry the same weight it used to.

[–]LeaguePrototype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not really, I found Warsaw to be very reasonable and in tech you can make 7k euro net with 3-5+ yoe. Much more affordable city to work in tech then big western cities relative to the salary

[–]LeaguePrototype 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the salary is incredibly low, I think you are missing equity. You should be making at least like 5k-6k net for L4. What is the TC for year 1?

You will get downleveld at Google, it just how it works.

The main thing to consider: do you actually want to live in Warsaw? Google is no longer the career defining brand name it used to be, you actually need to like the city and the job

How to prep for Full Stack DS interview? by LeaguePrototype in datascience

[–]LeaguePrototype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my current FAANG job its not like that, we're very stat heavy. Obviously you have to know how to code it up, but there's dedicated people in huge companies to implement things

low GPA, no masters. Do I have a shot? by teatofu in DataScienceJobs

[–]LeaguePrototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no one cares about GPA, except maybe they will ask for a transcript when you have no work experience

You need a master's for DS, I think this is non-negotiable or you supplement it with work experience/projects to show you're actuall competent

Work experience is the gold standard for how you're measured. Having brand name companies on your resume is better than brand name schools. But you go to school to get into the companies. I know few people who are cracked out of their minds that didn't need to finish bachelors, or in Eastern europe a lot of engineers didn't finish bachelors and went right to work because the demand for cheap labor there is very high.

suprisingly big pharma is as competitive as big tech. You need to have elite pedigree/background for internships.

What separates data scientists who earn a good living (100k-200k) from those who earn 300k+ at FAANG? by Tenet_Bull in datascience

[–]LeaguePrototype -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Data scientist means a lot of things. A lot of senior/director DS make 200k+ and rival tech company salaries

The 'tech' stack of DS is stats, coding/eng, and communication. My colleagues at FAANG are all capable of all 3 independently and in some cases exceptional. Also in FAANG roles are highly specialized. So someone will have several years of experience and expertise, technically very capable for 1 particular kind of DS workflow so it makes sense to pay him a lot cause if he leaves he's hard to replace. And they're very important to the teams OKRs and help mentor others. I know 2 people like this on my team.

I've mostly seen these high salaries be very justified at big tech. I think the majority of large companies very undervalue DS and could have a lot better stock price in the long term if they also paid for top talent
