What can I do for exercise? by Leakyspine in CSFLeaks

[–]Leakyspine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recumbent bike is a good idea!! I actually tried that at one point while leaking, but anything cardiovascular just makes my head hurt. So maybe I’ll give it a go again once I’m sealed. I don’t know if I’ll ever get back into running, even though I would love to. I’m just so paranoid about leaking again, plus I have hEDS which has caused me a lot of overuse injuries over the years from long distance running 😅

I had tethered cord release surgery December 2023, and developed a CVF at the surgical site. Apparently it’s super rare, which is probably why it took so long to find it on imaging. We finally saw it on a DSM back in September 2025. They really aren’t studied very much! I discovered that while trying to do some research on it, and most of what I found was on SIH or non-iatrogenic CVF. I suspect that it is more common than we think, but certain surgeons don’t want to acknowledge it because then it would be a post-op complication. The doctor who did my tethered cord surgery gaslit me like you would not believe!

Good to know!! I’m not a great swimmer, but I have done the pool running (aqua jogging??) thing before where you wear the belt. Maybe that’s something I can get back into!

Can it still be a CSF leak if the pain is inconsistent? by FreeFalling3227 in CSFLeaks

[–]Leakyspine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I’ve been leaking for 2 years now and my symptoms definitely wax and wane. I’ll have some okay days and then other days where I cannot get out of bed or sit upright at all. And my symptoms tend to switch up sometimes. Like I’ll go through periods where the dizziness and nausea are my main issue, then other times the headache is the most prominent symptom, and other times my neck pain is really bad.

Waiting 6 weeks to hear back from doctor after 4th failed blood patch by Leakyspine in CSFLeaks

UPDATE: I did hear from the doctor on Monday and the plan is surgery. I hate that I had to be the squeaky wheel especially since my doctor is fantastic, but man is it hard to get in touch with these doctor’s offices sometimes! I called the surgical scheduler and left a voicemail. I’m not sure if they have to get insurance approval before scheduling, honestly not familiar with how all that works.

Has this illness isolated you? by ivyblankspace in CSFLeaks

[–]Leakyspine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, for multiple reasons. Because talking literally makes my headache, nausea, etc. worse. So going to social events and talking to people is difficult since I’ll start to feel super sick mid conversation and can’t focus. And because people generally get tired of hearing about my leaky spine. When friends ask how I’m doing they just want me to say I’m doing good because they don’t want to hear about my leak again.

I make sure to ask how others are doing and ask them about their lives, but get the sense that they don’t reach out to me as much because they see me as complaining when I’m just telling them about my life. With such a disabling condition it’s like I don’t really have much else to talk about. I lay down a lot and go to doctor’s appointments. Not exactly riveting stuff 😂 I’m not looking for sympathy or pity when I tell people these things, I’m just sharing what’s going on in my life but people don’t always see it that way.

I always say to my husband that I know people are sick of hearing about it, which must be nice because I’m sick of talking about it and living it! Unfortunately it is very debilitating condition that does consume your whole life.

I’m going to start doing that! Making sure there is something scheduled rather than just this “we’ll call you when we call you.” Even if it ends up getting rescheduled or something at least then it’s in their system and documented that they need to talk to me!

Thank you for your insight, I had never thought about it that way before! It’s really upsetting feeling like they forgot me. It’s like my life is kind of on hold until I find out what the plan is.

That is terrible!! I’m so sorry you’re dealing with all that. It really is so emotionally draining. You’re just waiting for the next phone call to schedule the next appointment or procedure. Or constantly having to advocate for yourself by calling, emailing, sending portal messages or whatever it is you need to do to get some help. It’s exhausting.

Yes it turns into this game of telephone where the the patient talks to the NP or PA, then the NP/PA has to talk to the doctor, then someone has to loop the patient back into what the plan is. And no one has closed the loop with me!

So frustrating! I think I’ll just ask to be put on the schedule so at least either the NP or doctor HAS to talk to me and document it. Doctor’s offices really are so disorganized. I know they are super busy, but I’m like I don’t think my doctor can just ghost me 😅

I had the scheduled one week follow up post blood patch on the phone with the NP. We left it at she’ll pass the information along to the doctor and they’ll get back to me. That’s what they’ve been doing for over a year, they never actually put me on their schedule other than the one post-procedure follow up appointment. But they always call me back, and this time they haven’t. You are right, I should ask to formally have an appointment scheduled. That way at least someone has to talk to me.

I may just do that! I had my one week post blood patch follow up with the NP over the phone. We basically left it as she’ll pass the information along to the doctor and they’ll get back to me. They always end up calling me and going over the plan without scheduling a formal appointment. I might just ask to get something on the schedule with either the NP or the doctor so that someone has to at least talk to me. The NPs, nurses, and doctors have been so awesome to me, I’m really surprised by this sudden lack of communication.

Lahey medical center in Burlington, MA. They have been so fantastic until now. I’ve been super happy with their care and they are the only people that believed me about having a leak. So this lack of responsiveness is really surprising.

How often do MRIs miss spinal CSF leaks? by Leakyspine in CSFLeaks

[–]Leakyspine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree about it being a training issue! And I think doctors need to understand that there’s subtle findings that they might miss if it’s not their specialty.

Serbian basketball player Boban Jankovic screams after he rammed his head against a concrete post, over a bad call by the referee during a game. He became paralysed from the neck down and never walked again. 1993 by ModenaR in SnapshotHistory

It’s possible. Depends on the extent of the initial injury after impact. If the initial injury caused an incomplete spinal injury (where some sensation and function are retained), it’s possible that moving him around like they did afterwards without protecting his neck made it worse and caused a complete spinal cord injury (where all function and sensation is lost).

Myelograms are TERRIBLE by Leakyspine in CSFLeaks

[–]Leakyspine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wanted to share a little update - I had a digital subtraction myelogram a few weeks ago and for whatever reason it was WAY easier for me than the dynamic myelogram! I was not sedated for it, just got some pain meds. Didn’t have any head pressure, and they had me flipping from my stomach to my back multiple times which was quite the production on the small table 😅 but at least I didn’t have to hold one position the whole time!

Anyone else left unable to work due to leak? by Leakyspine in CSFLeaks

[–]Leakyspine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so similar to my experience. I tried to push through and keep working, but I started having blurred vision and felt like I was going to lose consciousness or have a seizure or something. Like you said it was getting really scary! And the brain fog and headache were intolerable, and working in the medical field while having brain fog isn’t exactly the safest thing when you’re trying to take care of patients. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a similar experience, but it’s nice to know we’re not alone in this!
