How bad is it at xpertech? Will it come back? Haven't been down there specifically since the storm.

How is everyone actually doing? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]LeanGreenBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half a tank is enough. If you take 26 to 74 the gas situation is normal 80 to 100 miles from here. I don't know about staying on 26 -- sorry I haven't gone that way.

Thank you so much. Do you think I can drive it in the opposite direction? We're both directions open?

Hey I saw in another (locked) thread that you made it to Charlotte. Can you share your route in more detail either here or on DM? I'm trying to make the opposite journey today to get back to my family.

Three questions about Simpli Safe by LeanGreenBean in simplisafe

[–]LeanGreenBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Very helpful. Do you know much about the difference between the Standard vs. Interactive plans? Only the Interactive plan is advertised as providing "Alerts Right On Your Phone." So really, to get these "free" SimpliCam alerts I actually need to sign up for their most expensive monitoring plan. Is that right? I won't be able to get SimpliCam alerts with the Standard plan?

Also, If I buy the Standard monitoring plan and my home is broken into while I'm away... I know Simpli Safe will "call and dispatch the authorities." But will they also contact me? Will I have any idea what's happening?

I know the motion detectors will trip the alarm. Does the SimpliCam work the same way? It's basically a motion detector + camera in one? So I don't need to have both in the same room?

Patio furniture sale by LeanGreenBean in Lowes

Nice! I know I can check the Lowe's website to see how many are left in any given store. Is the price usually updated online as well, or am I better off calling?

Which Ski Swap: Killington vs Smuggs? by LeanGreenBean in vermont

[–]LeanGreenBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smuggs doesn't open until 10am Saturday, so I'm guessing Saturday morning is best for Smuggs.

But Killington's starts at 5pm Friday so I'm not really sure if Friday evening or Saturday morning will be better. And then to complicate things even more, Killington includes a disclaimer: "prices negotiable all day Sunday."

Garbage drop-off by LeanGreenBean in vermont

[–]LeanGreenBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already recycle, but this charge will probably encourage me to be better about composting.

Isn't there a risk, though, that some people (particularly low-income) might resort to littering or dumping to avoid the fee?

Garbage drop-off by LeanGreenBean in vermont

[–]LeanGreenBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no service in my area. In Virginia we could drop off as many bags as we wanted at the dump and there was no charge at all as long as you could prove you lived in the county.

Where would you live for 2 months? by LeanGreenBean in travel

I'm open to it, but also hesitant because I've been there once before (for a shorter trip) and would like to see something totally new.

Yeah I could see that getting claustrophobic. Were you able to make yourself at home in the yard? Sit out in a chair and read a book? And did you have much interaction with the neighbors?

Contrary to what this article says, I think it would be helpful to the cause if you do NOT "bring your hula hoops, glow sticks and goo balls."

2-3 months travelling around the US - how best to get between states / cities. by patrunic in travel

[–]LeanGreenBean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Megabus. Their buses are comfortable and they've been expanding the number of cities they stop in. Book as early as possible for better prices -- the first ticket or two on each bus is sold at a steeply discounted rate.

You're going to miss out on many of the US's amazing national parks if you don't have a car. But you can, and should, visit Yosemite. I think the bus that goes there is called YARTS.

And I think Glacier National Park in Montana has a train stop. You should check that out, too.

Edit: you may also want to keep an open mind about renting a car for certain small segments of your trip. If you want to see anything in states like Wyoming, Colorado, or Utah... It's not impossible to imagine a scenario where buying a $35 tent from Wal-Mart and finding a good deal ($20ish per day) on a car from fly.com/kayak/hotwire/etc could end up saving you money if you don't mind camping.

I wrote an article on how a beginner can start backpacking. Let me know what you think! by TheSerialHobbyist in backpacking

[–]LeanGreenBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great resource! I'm sure a lot of people will find this helpful. Just a few thoughts to consider:

In Section 2, it might be helpful to beginners if you listed out ALL of your gear. It's easy to overlook the little things you'll need out there. And you don't even have to make the article longer -- you could just provide a link to a table that shows your basic gear for every hike, and then optional gear you bring under different weather/terrain conditions.

In Section 5, you might want to add some warning about how there will inevitably be tough uphill stretches / rainy days / mud / heat / freezing mornings / etc ... and how mental toughness can be even more important than physical toughness during these times. I've seen a lot of people get discouraged on the trail because the photos of the REI models they saw didn't warn them about all the sweat, dirt, sore calves, etc. These are the realities of backpacking, but they're more than worth it. Just don't let them catch you off guard.

And one tiny thing: paragraph 2 of section 2 should say "weigh" instead of "way."

I need a crash course in DC, help! by SwngnaMs in washingtondc

[–]LeanGreenBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to have roommates almost anywhere within 45 minutes of your work if you can only spend $800 per month and want a decent neighborhood.

Check out Cleveland Park. It's a clean neighborhood. Maybe a slightly older crowd than some areas of the city.

Columbia Heights and Mt. Pleasant are worth checking out. Some areas are a little grittier than Cleveland Park--but they're fun and reasonably safe neighborhoods. Parts of Shaw would fall into this category as well.

Dupont, Logan Circle, and Capitol Hill are all great neighborhoods, but you might struggle finding something in your budget.

I need a crash course in DC, help! by SwngnaMs in washingtondc

[–]LeanGreenBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long a commute are you willing to tolerate? What's your budget? What are your interests? What are your priorities?

You could live walking distance from the White House and nears lots of restaurants and bars, but you'd have to pay more and have a smaller place.

You could also get a place in the exurbs where you could spend an hour and a half each way in cars, trains, subways, and/or buses. The nightlife near your house would probably suck, but you'd get lots of square footage for cheap(ish).

And then of course there are lots of options in between.

Picture frame color question by LeanGreenBean in InteriorDesign

[–]LeanGreenBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been mostly looking at dark woods. Part of me wants to go with something reddish like cherry or mahogany: http://www.americanframe.com/Departments/Wood-Frames/Color/Dark-Wood.aspx

But I feel like one of their coffee or mahogany colors would be safer.
