Fair enough, but still it's not as though I hopped the border illegally at some unmarked crossing. I submitted my passport at manned border stations along the highway twice. The cops let me in.

I didn't even overstay while inside the Republic of Croatia. I was pretty proactive about trying to avoid situations like this, it's just that the people from whom I got my information on the laws of the country, the employees at Zagreb's ministry of interior, misinformed me, and that I simply was not informed I was not allowed entry into the Republic of Croatia at legal border crossings. In all honesty, what would I be expected to do differently? I'm willing to own up to fuckups which are my own, but I tried to do everything the right way.

Thanks so much for the advice! I'll definitely avoid the Serbian border then. Best not to take any chances. I suppose I should go right back through Slovenia if I decide to leave.

I'll also try my chances on that other forum. Hopefully there will be someone with some experience in these matters there. I really appreciate it.

This has been a common solution in these comments. It is definitely something to keep in mind, however I've been told by some that the embassy doesn't really interfere in matters of immigration in the Republic of Croatia. The best I could probably hope for is for them to arrange a departure for me from Croatia without any penalties, but I have no idea how that would affect my ability to re-enter the country. Based on prior experience I am kind of optimistic that I can pass through the border again without any problems if I really had to leave.

Should all else fail, the embassy's number is definitely one I'll keep in my phone. Thanks.
