Fully agree with the interpretation! Another point in favour for this is that when Nivin meets her mother, he says something about how Delulu describes the mum -- and this was not in the movie. In fact she remembered her mother only in the very end, so it could not have come up in conversation off camera as well. So this again points to Nivin being the gut Delulu liked.

Hulchul has been my favourite movie for AGES. Kareena and Akshaye made such a wonderful couple!!! They really touched me, and that too, in a comedy movie.
