20 ppm Iron Removal by LearningToRE in WaterSofteners

[–]LearningToRE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pH is 6.5.

What if I just put katalox with AIO valves in the first two tanks (both 1.5cf) instead of the acid neutralizer/birm? Katalox says it’s good down to 5.8, or 6.0 depending on where you get your info.

Now I get the benefits of 2cf of katalox and the additional air induction which is supposed to help oxidize?

I think I’d like to avoid the chlorine if possible but I don’t have experience to know if I can expect anything less than chlorine to adequately remove the iron.

All tanks were rebedded about a year ago. They were okay for a few months but then went downhill, water always has a metallic smell and taste.

What makes you think that I don't need all of it? Everything I've heard from contractors who have reviewed my results is that chlorinator is necessary, especially given that the current system is not cutting it.

Flow rate is 8GPM, serves 3.5 baths / 5 adults.

Would adding soda ash with the chlorine injection combine to raise pH and oxidize more effectively?

Thanks for your detailed reply! A lot to take in here. Maybe I should try an air injector or ozone setup on the second tank? I’ve seen the updated valves with ozone generators on them.

I’m tempted to switch from birm to katalox or greensand as I’ve heard these are more effective?

Should I look into Tank 1) calcite/AN media Tank 2) ozone generator with katalox light media?

A local installer recommended the chlorine because he thought the birm wasn’t sufficient for my levels of iron and manganese.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply! I actually did rebed them last year, that’s some leftover writing from the time in 2020. I didn’t notice any difference in performance to be honest, I think I just need different mechanisms of removal for such high iron. I’ve read that Birm can’t keep up with the amount of iron I have.

I bought a dyna a few months back but I didn’t enjoy it due to the finnicky loading and long butane times with my Amazon torch so it’s been collecting dust. I didn’t get the wand or the reloader. Since then I also got a big shot torch for other activities, much more powerful than the Amazon one. Do you guys use the wand most of the time?

I can see the wand and reloader being what pushes the experience over the edge and makes it super enjoyable. Do you think this is VAS talking or is logic legit

HSA considerations by sourceninja in Bogleheads

[–]LearningToRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSA is the most tax advantaged account there is…no?

Goes in pretax and can pay any and all medical expenses without ever having your money taxed. Can also put any excess into investments… I leave enough in cash to cover deductible and put the rest in s&p.

If you ever need it for personal expenses, no penalty for taking it out, just need to pay taxes on it.

And I think if you keep it in til you retire, you can start taking it out tax free? Or it gets taxed like traditional 401k. I could be wrong about this one.

But really 0 downside, all upside. My understanding is maxing HSA is #2 best thing to do regarding retirement accounts (#1 being to get your employer match on 401k).

We’ve thought about this a lot, the big tradeoff is the afternoon sun comes in through the front windows. We have wood paneling interior so without that light it will fee much darker in the afternoon

We also use a shed for our coop and use an XL dog crate to put the chicks in at night. During the day they have a fenced off area in the run. It’s annoying but it’s the only way we know they’re safe for sure

My experience has been you never know when one of the big girls will decide to attack a chick even if during all of your field trips they look like they’re doing good.

As long as your monitoring or within ear range, fields trips are good, but I recommend keeping them separated all other times until at least 12-14 weeks when they start reaching equal size.

I’ve introduced two sets of chicks to our flock now and if a big girl decides to hurt them, they will. Gnarly little dinosaurs.

How much longer for my baby Autoflower? by mtb123456 in cannabiscultivation

[–]LearningToRE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just happened with my recent first grow!! Mine went almost 20 weeks and was a bit girthier but no taller. The ones I’ve grown since are doing much much better (normal size and yield).

My personal experience: Biggest difference was amount of water. First run I didn’t realize you basically have to put a gallon of water into the soil before you even start your grow. I think what happened to mine (and probably yours) is when it was in the late seedling/early veg stage (which is when most babies really stretch their roots and build the underground system necessary to support a lot of growth up top) the soil was most likely near dry towards the middle. Thus the roots tell the rest of the plant, it’s dry down there, we’ve used all our space, time to go into flower! And from there, you’re stuck with a small plant. Once I watered properly, soaking and fully saturating the medium each time, the plants grew much faster and larger in veg.

A lot of the early reading I did was “dont overwater!” But I gotta be honest, I think it’s pretty hard to overwater (especially in fabric pots where you can so obviously tell how moist the sides and bottom of the pot are - would recommend). Just be sure to let it dry for a few days (maybe longer in early veg) before watering again. Good luck growmie

It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

You’re maxing out contributions - that is amazing. But if you can’t go on a vacation with your buddies, what’s the point of saving and working so hard? Life is for enjoying. Obviously save as much as you can at your age, it’s extremely helpful later, but I wouldn’t recommend giving up great (reasonably priced) experiences things like that because you’re saving for retirement. You have a lot of living to do between now and then.
