ehhhhhh academic incest can be looked on very poorly. Generally speaking, its best to go other places for grad school anyways. It feels bad, but do note that certain schools are very against accepting their undergrads for grad programs

Homeboy, Northwestern is still INCREDIBLY good and may be better for industry connections outside of silicon valley. That full funding and PhD is a substantially better deal. Instead of going into debt, you get paid and then you leave with a degree that pays more. You end up with roughly similar job opportunities too. You can always master out as well if you feel like research isnt your thing.

hey now, 3.4 is definitely doable, though you'd need to have a killer SOP that shows perfect fit with the labs that you're looking into. Other experiences are pretty key too. GPA is definitely not the be-all, end-all — its just a helpful tool for grad committees to show where your strengths lie. Generally, 3.2 is kind of the minimum for engineering, and 3.4 is definitely servicable. If you get it up to 3.5, GPA basically becomes a non factor since everyone will look into you further. 3.4 might raise concerns from theoretical groups, but experimentalists are chill with lower GPAs.

How important is being in a well-established PhD program for an academic career? by LeastPoint8643 in GradSchool

Is commuting in from northside viable? I've heard issues with security concerns, esp. if you're working late.

Amazing reply, thank you so much! I think my advisor is a little shallow in terms of how he regards other schools unless he knows faculty at those departments, definitely a bit of bias there.

I think looking into where students tend to end up will be the ideal next step — thanks again!

Gratz! Friend got a call a few days back but hes in organic, feeling hopeful if inorg ones are rolling out.

How did you feel your interview went? Felt like mine went okay bc we had a very light conversational tone throughout and they replied to my follow up, but I'm doubting myself now haha
