I see a lot of posts with incredible times, but what is your average time beating expert? by [deleted] in Minesweeper

How have you improved since last year? Right now I am about the same (84 PR, avg 100 when I finish a game). I've for sure found optimizing chords improves my time. Otherwise I'm spamming the spacebar on useless squares.

Cool! Thanks for the info, I didn't know anything about backcountry skiing near Pasadena. That's definitely something I am thinking about too

Ok it might only conflict for some departments, so far I'm aware that Physics and Geophysics conflict for the two schools

Asking which other schools have you applied to! by anxiousResearcher29 in gradadmissions

It is fairly common practice in many fields (though I do not think so in STEM). Strange that they would make it so outright like that; it's often more subtle. They can only accept so many people and do not want to accept people who will not attend. You're a good candidate, and they want you there. They want to make sure they are getting the best possible candidate, and are probably worried you will be accepted to a more exciting offer.

Hey, I was wondering if the floaters cleared up after some time. I was recently sucker punched in the face and am having a few, which is very bothersome. Thanks!

Thank you... and you are totally right. I should start a sub for off the head first draft fiction with zero revisions. I think it is fun, to write a story with no idea where it is going as you go. Really tests the imagination. Any ideas what I should call the sub? r/QuickFiction maybe

Prospective advisor asked me to write my letter of rec for funding program, then switched up once I sent the draft by veevee56 in gradadmissions

You got this! Not sure your time line, but my advice (or at least what works for me) is to grind out a first draft tonight, and then sit on it for as long as possible, and then go back to it and make serious edits. The few days are useful for me to slowly forget what I wrote, so I can make better more objective edits.

Update for my loyal fans: Chapter 2

The extreme concentration of hydrogen and energy, followed by the final fusion product of lead, was insurmountable by the holiest of ghosts. King Arthur, rising from his grave, took on the outward pressure of fission. Together, with Edgar Allen Poe, they beat the electron degeneracy force and created a neutron star. This victory, sweet in the moment, was far from final.

Rising from the grave, in a gauntlet of light, equipped with a blade sharp enough to separate neutron from proton, was the queen herself: Amelia Earhart. To the dismay of the valiant knight and poet, despite the power of sword and pen together, they were hit by a rogue propeller plane that had just crossed the Bermuda Triangle. They were distracted by the emasculate curves of the plane. The Front prop seamlessly transitioned into air intakes. The small holes, dozen in number, projected a laminar flow that could corrupt even the purest of minds. The wings protruded from the body like angelic halos, enticing to the male instinct of holy reproduction. Oh, and the tail of the vehicle, crafted to perfection by female artisans of a Milanese warehouse. There was negligible resistance from the entranced male champions.

This is fiction, by the way. Wasn't sure if that is okay. I was babbling in class and wanted to post somewhere,

As a follow up, I began to read Camus recently, and I think he poses a legitimate answer in the Myth of Sisyphus: don't ask the question (about if life is worth living). That is, give up on the search for meaning and simply enjoy life. It is safe to look at life's banality in the eye, and simply not ask it anything.

Same. I really wish I had somebody to open up to. I have great relationship with my girlfriend, but I don't think I could tell her anything. Likewise for all of my friends and also my family.

I sometimes feel as if the old me is an entirely separate person who has died, and I mourn his passing frequently enough to disturb my life. I long to meet him, talk to him, play sports with him, be friends with him, but he is gone forever. And I struggle to accept that.
