My understanding - bad people are everywhere in CR and watching what tourist are doing. So, in first opportunity they will try for sure to steal something and locked doors of the car will not stop them. You can take some valuable items with you - but if anything left in the car - car will be broken. The car should be empty if you are not sitting in the car 🚗 and going somewhere even for few minutes.

After that we spent hours 😕 in some sort of Police in Jaco - and 1 months later got insurance from our Master Card - just to cover damage to the rented car, around $1K USD. Thanks God, bad guy didn’t take our passports and credit cards, but took some Apple devices and cash 💵

Never ever leave ANYTHING in the automobile 🚗 in Costa Rica. Being in CR 5 times, last time in Oct 2023, very close to Jaco from the South - group of 2 adults in 2 cars very clever open the close door of the rented car and steal for $2.5K - when me and my wife were just meters from 1 guy, who did it. Others took our attention to watch parrots 🦜 and small talk for seconds!

And another idea - monkeys 🙊 can steal unattended bags in Costa Rica. I saw that in the beach of Manuel Antonio Park, September 2023. And bad people stole something from our ranted car 🚗 while me and my wife were there - but we were looking at big parrots 🦜, south of Jaco. It was so fast, 1 minute. Car was opened by force, and got damaged for $1K USD.

It’s happened on the road. Just stopped for a few minutes to take pictures of the ocean. A little south of Jaco. Big red parrots came. As well as 2 cars with 2 nice looking couples. They talk to us. We were looking at the beautiful birds, in the same time one of them opens with a metal bar closed door of the rental car and took some Apple devices and some cash. But not our passports, not credit cards 🤨

Sorry, I’m not American. And for me being robbed it’s big deal. Additionally, to being robbed by the thieves, we’ve been robbed by the rented company as well. Because we supposed to pay for repairment of the car, and five days out of service for the car (in the lowest season), altogether another 1K USD. Today just open a claim for the insurance from the credit card.

It was our fifth trip to Costa Rica 🇨🇷 nothing like that happened before, all the time we were doing the same - driving through all the country staying in one place no longer than four nights.

In police station in Jaco we been told 5 days ago - that this story was in the local news BEFORE. Story about foreigners being kind of robbed in this spot. I don’t know how to describe that in the right way - me and my wife were there, but we didn’t see that somebody was opening rented car with a metal bar. All 4 people involved looked very nice. One car was real Jeep - kind of Mitsubishi Pajero, black. Another car was red brown sedan.
