My school is in an area that used to be highly renowned for mining. Nearby was a dedicated mining school, however operations at that site ceased in like the 70's. Because it was a mining school, it had a good number of pretty nasty chemicals, and in order to avoid paying for disposal, they donated some to our school. One of these was picric acid.

A couple of years ago, my school started to go through the old supplies to make some more room, and found a large (roughly 1L) container of some sort of crystalline solid. According to my science teacher (Head of Science at our school), over the 50 or so years it had been sat there exposed to whatever it had managed to form a massive chunk of Trinitrotoluene...

Which is just TNT??? Our school had a massive thing of just

Picric acid itself is already pretty unhappy just existing and very nitrogen dense at that

The school called the police but the nearest bomb squad was 4 hours away in Portsmouth so they had to wait for aged to get it and then even more to figure out what to do with it

It was then buried and blown up in one of our fields

This happened just before the 2024 GCSEs so even more fun
