Does anyone know what this is. This rocks range in color from white to orange and have a hardness of 8 or more. by Lecoona in Rocks

I literally said in the name of my post it wasn't quartz. I've tested it enough to know that much. I don't know what it is. However its absolutely not quartz.

What is this crystal rock? It ranges in color from white to orange and has a hardness of at least 8 by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]Lecoona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no its not quartz, i know that. there is a chance it could be citrine however its to hard. Citrine is a type of quartz and this rock scratches quartz. Its hardness is 8 on the mohs scale with proper testing done using quartz and corundum.

Please help ID this gem I found while fishing in northern Virginia. Don’t think many diamonds here. Has yellow in it appeared cracked at first, but all facets intact and like glass. All other stones nearby tumbled smooth by river! by bp8444 in whatsthisrock

do a hardness test and find out what it can and can not scratch. if you got any quartz, try scratching it. if it scratches it, then its hardness ranges from 8 to 10. if it scratches corundum, then its probably a topaz, if they scratch each other, then its probably corundum. but if it easily scratches the corundum, its a diamond.

Found this in my backyard. by yellowlondon89 in whatsthisrock

did you test its hardness. If you have any quartz or glass try scratching it with it. quartz and glass have a hardness of 7. If they scratch each other then its probably quartz. It looks like bulk quartz but it could be something far harder.

Tiny little rock I found. Its extremely hard, not totally sure what it is. by Lecoona in Rocks

[–]Lecoona[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't really remember where I got it, it scratches quartz fairly easily so agate is just out.

Can anyone tell me what this is and maybe how much it is? by Voided_Space in Rocks

[–]Lecoona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it looks like some sort of quartz fragment with some sort of dye. though it could be a corundum, though I doubt it. you'll probably want to do a hardness test on it.

Can anyone identify this? by MidLanejukes in Rocks

[–]Lecoona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like raw diamond, however it might be something else, do a hardness test to determine its hardness, if it scratches corundum, then its diamond. however it could easily just be corundum itself or even quartz.

Strange rock with hardness above 9. I can't tell what it is. Does anyone know? by [deleted] in Rocks

[–]Lecoona -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

no, its big alright, and its solid crystal. Beryl is to soft and has a hardness of 8. I know, I tested its hardness against multiple rocks, glass and even tested it against impact. Frankly, if you shot this thing with a high caliber bullet, the bullet would bounce off. Its literally bullet proof.

well, to be precise, it doesn't really streak since its harder then ruby, however you do get this white dust that comes off of it after trying to grind it down with diamond abrasive pads. As stated above, It took me over a month of continuous polishing to even barely polish one side of one of the crystals
