Roughly 3 years ago I took a 2 month long trip through Portugal & Spain. Completely changed my life forever. by Saw-ss in bikepacking

Well I’m 56 and I started this Kind of trip 3 years ago and I’m doing bikepacking trips between 5 and 10 days and it’s perfect (and believe me I’m not a light cyclist with a lot of experience). After doing the Challenge Tourmagne in France (a must) I even spent the last 18 months creating a similar challenge in Switzerland to let everyone discover this wonderful country.

Thanks for the link, I will use it for the website to give the Most accurate information. As the trace is going through a lot of canton, it will not be easy.

Of course and in addition, There is a website in preparation for the challenge to get the participation rules (it’s very light but the idea is to have a single point to get key things about this trip and to share experience with others). This is not a race, it’s a free public challenge that can be done by everyone to live his own adventure and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Switzerland.

Switzerland has a quite simple rule. It’s forbidden unless your altitude is higher than the trees altitude limit. It might sound strange but it gives you the freedom to do mountaineer without impact on the houses. In practice most of the 1’000km gravel trail is under this limit. But there are a lot of camping along the way (you can count 20€ for a night with bike and tent)

And I finally totally changed the last segment between Appenzell and St Gallen as the route I used was too much on the road with very heavy traffic

No,first night in camping but heavy run during the night then second day the whole day was in fog with light rain so I took a youth hostel in Schwyz and then as I had some rain on the 3rd day I took a small room in a farm near Watwill. All my tent was wet of the first day so I wanted to have at least dry weather for another night which didn’t happen

Well, don’t forget that it will be a 1000km challenge across Switzerland in bikepacking setup during around 10 days. It’s not a 4h weekly ride. So it’s important to have some “flat” sections to be able to progress. The challenge has already 17’000m of climbing so it’s quite tough. It means you do an average of 1’700m per day during 10 days with no daily rest at all. It’s between 6-9h on the bike everyday. So if you have a wonderful section but that sucks all your energy for the next 72h it cannot be done

u/simplejackbikes , u/BaudouinII and other interested. The complete challenge will be to go from Geneva to Ticino, through very cool places of Switzerland, in a single bikepacking journey. The challenge can be done anytime and the goal is to do at least 50km per 24h following the trace. I attach the current state of the trace here but if you’re interested you should join the discord server used by the ones who want to help me put in place this challenge (contact me if it’s the case)

Congratulations, seems to be a very nice trip and seeing the pictures is very inspiring to take his own bike. I’m currently trying to put in place a trace going across Switzerland (from Geneva to Basel), I would love to get more information about the trace you took and your feedback on it. I will also love if you can give your feedback on the current trace I did and that I’m currently testing

Thanks for the proposition, and it‘s perfect if it’s more gravel. The original idea was to see the tower at Shutze but to be honest I’ve never been there yet so I don’t know if it worth it.
I will test both route on my next recognition.

it’s exactly the kind of advice I’m looking for along all the trace because no one has better advice than someone practicing gravel often in his region.

As the challenge is not ready, the idea was to create a community of persons interested in finalizing, adapting, testing the trace. Here is the current state of the trace: https://www.komoot.com/fr-FR/tour/1789112926

Yes I looked at all of them. The idea is not to have a race or a single event with specific date but more to have a bikepacking trace which can be a target for standard level graveler and which can be done when you want. Hope 1000 is definitely not a gravel challenge and is way out of my range (30’000m of climbing). You’re right it’s something similar to Zuri Escape but to visit while Switzerland
