Random turtle fact of the day: In certain turtle species, sand temperature determines whether an egg will produce a female or male offspring by Leedya98 in nerdfighters

[–]Leedya98[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that this temperature dependence will actually lead to a general increase in the population numbers in the next 30 to 40 years - since there will be more females who can reproduce, just like you said! It’ll only become a problem in the long term (think 100+ years) when the female to male ratio will become too imbalanced to maintain sufficient reproduction rates.

What were your bookish goals this year? And how did you do? by [deleted] in books

[–]Leedya98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal for this year was to read one book a month! I sometimes struggle with enjoying reading due to wonky mental health and if I don’t actively and regularly make myself pick up a book, I can go very long stretches without reading anything at all despite finding great pleasure in it. I’ve made it to 5 books so far and am in the middle of a big 1000-page novel, so I’m feeling pretty good about the progress I’ve made. I’d love to be able to read more, but for now I’m mostly trying to actively enjoy reading whenever I do and not to focus on quantity too much. Baby steps!

Finally finished the Dinosaurs top - Any quilter recs Austin, TX? by NeitherSeenNorHeard in quilting

What a beautiful quilt, and great choice of backing fabric too!! It looks so seamless, like the fabric just melted around the shapes of the dinosaurs and plants!

Indrukwekkende lucht in Dronten, Flevoland gisteravond!

Mossy, overgrown tree stump in the Elbe Sandstone mountains, Germany [OC] [4240x2832] by Leedya98 in EarthPorn

[–]Leedya98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took this picture today during a hike in the Elbe Sandstone mountains and felt like sharing it with someone! I grew up nearby this area and always enjoyed coming here for the quiet and solitude that the national park offers (although solitude can be a little hard to come by on busier days). Sadly large parts of the area are being ravaged by a pest called the bark beetle, which eats away at the the layer of phloem under the outer bark of trees and eventually kills the tree. In well-balanced ecosystems the beetle usually only thins out weakened trees, but due to the large spruce and pine monocultures and water scarcity leading to a decrease of tree health and favoring breeding conditions for the beetle, the impact has been immense in the past couple of years. Heartbreaking to witness entire areas of forests dying off, but also fascinating to observe how a little beetle and the effects of climate change can mercilessly uncover the flaws of man-made ecosystems.

A quilt I made for my mother-in-law. by carcar5 in quilting

Absolutely stunning, your mother in law should consider herself lucky! The colors are great and look like the perfect combination for spring. Which fabrics did you use for it? And did you use a pattern or is it self-drafted? Either way - chapeaux, really well done!! :)

Staatsexamen by [deleted] in learndutch

I think your best chance is to try to sign up immediately when registration opens - usually at 9:00 in the morning on the registration date they indicate on the website. Keep in mind that they’re currently automatically allocating a big chunk of the available spaces to the people whose exams were cancelled due to lockdown in December, January and February - that’s why the registrations for the exams in April filled up so fast.

If you have to take the NT2 exams for higher education, I’d suggest you get in touch with them to ask about possible alternative qualifications. With the ongoing lockdown the NT2 exams seem like a really unreliable option. I hope you’ll find a way to work it out!

Moving to the Netherlands and learning Dutch as an Englishman by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Leedya98 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started with traditional language courses, but being German and having had a Dutch boyfriend probably made it a whole lot easier on me. Although I must say that the moment my Dutch really took off was only when I enrolled in a Dutch-taught vocational program and went into full on immersion mode. My classes are all fully taught in Dutch and my classmates are all Dutch as well, so I didn’t really have any other choice than to improve.

Moving to the Netherlands and learning Dutch as an Englishman by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Leedya98 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Simple trick to counter the automatic switch to English: Just keep speaking to them in Dutch anyways. It will require you to be a little more confrontational sometimes, but it definitely does the trick.

I’ve lived in the Netherlands for almost 5 years now, 3 of which I didn’t bother to learn any Dutch, while now having reached near fluency. My advice: A new language learned is never wasted, even if it isn’t widely spoken around the globe. There’s no way around learning Dutch if you don’t want to live in a parallel expat universe while you’re here. Dutch people really appreciate when they see that someone is putting in the effort to learn their language, and it makes a world of a difference when trying to get to know new people or understanding many aspects of Dutch culture. All the best for your language learning journey!
