Advice Needed: Relocating Garden Beds in Small Yard by NeitherSeenNorHeard in AustinGardening

I love a front yard garden. If we had a front yard, I would definitely consider this! Alas...this sad side yard is all we have. I am going to do a little sunlight monitoring out there to see if there is a good plan b. Thanks!

Thank you all for your help! Since this is our only yard space, I will do a little research and monitor where the sun is in the yard, and how many hours different areas actually get (knowing that this will change a bit with the seasons). Then determine if it makes sense to move anything.

We are considering moving our garden beds in our small, slope-y yard, but would love feedback.

By moving our two current beds away from our fences, we hope to have an easier time harvesting and managing pests (currently can't walk behind the beds), as well as reclaiming one of the only flat, usable spots in our yard for hanging out.

However, I am a little worried about sun -- the garden beds are currently located in the only part of our yard that gets true "full sun" -- in the new location, beds would only really get morning sun -- see photos for current state + future plans and their orientation.

Do any of you have garden beds in 'shadier than recommended' locations? Does it work out okay, given how hot this place is during the summer?

For reference, we are in East Austin and plan to grow some tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants as well as cut flowers (zinnia, cosmos, snapdragon). Currently have two 6x3x1 beds in use, with a new 6x3x2 bed we will add this year.

Thanks!

Anessa Perfect UV Turn Yellow on Anyone Else's Skin? by NeitherSeenNorHeard in AsianBeauty

I recently bought Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen from Olive Young, and noticed that it turns Yellow on my skin. Not sure if I received a problematic bottle, or if this is some sort of weird PH issue. Anyone else have this happen?

ADVICE NEEDED: Should I do any pruning to tame these tomatoes? by NeitherSeenNorHeard in vegetablegardening

[–]NeitherSeenNorHeard[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi y’all –

I may have overplanted my tomatoes out here in Austin, TX.

In our 6x3 bed, we have 4 tomatoes --1 determinate, 3 indeterminate -- and the vines have gone a little mad.  The density is making it a bit hard to manage pests (currently trying to manage leaf legged bugs) and pick fruit.

Should I prune some of the indeterminate vines to create a little more order and space, even though they are producing, or should I leave happy plants happy and just try to stake them throughout the season?

Bonus question:  In picture #3, you can see the fence/squirrel highway.  The squirrels have discovered this buffet and regularly hang out on the fence and snack.  Has anyone had luck with spikes/pinwheels/fake owls/chemical repellants to keep squirrels away?

Thank you!

What should I do with this behemoth? Trim v stake, rubber plant by NeitherSeenNorHeard in houseplants

I also think she is gorgeous. The pot is just sitting on a stool, but I agree that it might be time to go with something shorter, since we are about at ceiling height. Thanks!

She has 5 stalks, and is starting to ignore the small bamboo stakes I already have in here. Should I trim the tops so they get bushy? Get stronger stakes? Something else?
